Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor is undoubtedly the most popular fighter on the organization’s entire roster, even though he has not been active since 2021. Despite headlines of him focusing on a bid for Ireland’s presidency, McGregor has been posting training footage and has been listed in the UFC’s drug testing pool, teasing a possible return to the Octagon.
Now, however, the possibility of a comeback may have screeched to a halt.
UFC fans were sent into a frenzy today when prominent X (formerly Twitter) accounts @UFCRosterWatch and @RosterTracker reported that McGregor had been quietly removed from the promotion’s active roster.
The accounts, which track UFC roster updates via the organization’s official API, stated that McGregor’s name no longer appeared in the database, fueling speculation that he had been dropped.
UFCRosterWatch in particular defended their initial report, with a post on X that read, “Yes, Conor is still showing on the UFC Stat website. I never received so many messages of disbelief that he is actually gone. This is my log file, which has never been wrong, and he is showing as removed.”
UFC CEO Dana White, however, abruptly shut these reports down in an Instagram comment section of a report (via Happy Punch).
White wrote, “Total BULLSH—,” dismissing the speculation as false.
His dismissal aligns with his recent statements about McGregor’s comeback plans on the Draft Kings podcast Pardon My Take, saying, “If you see, he’s been posting videos of himself training, he’s back in the [drug testing] pool now... He wants the White House fight.”
McGregor himself has yet to address the situation publicly, uncharacteristic for the outspoken fighter. His silence contrasts with his recent social media activity, where he’s expressed interest in the White House event, and teased training footage.
With the UFC preparing for the Paramount deal next year, the MMA world will wait to see if the sport’s most iconic and controversial figure will be a part of its new chapter.
