Two of the greatest welterweights in MMA history just had a conversation that could shape the final chapter of Kamaru Usman’s career. During a recent appearance on a Kick livestream with Adin Ross, UFC legend Georges St-Pierre revealed a private discussion he had with Kamaru Usman, offering advice on how a champion should leave the sport. St-Pierre who retired as one of the most decorated fighters in MMA history, with both of his career losses avenged kept it blunt and real.
“Are you going to compete again?” “Yeah, I think I’m going to go for one more stretch,” Usman told him.
That’s when GSP gave him the message only a GOAT can deliver.
“If you want my advice, Kamaru… do what you’ve got to do. Get it out of your system. But get out on top.”

Usman (21-4) snapped a three-fight skid this year by defeating Joaquin Buckley, injecting life back into his career after back-to-back losses to Leon Edwards and a short-notice defeat to Khamzat Chimaev at middleweight.
He remains one of the most respected names in the sport and a fight with new welterweight champion Islam Makhachev has reportedly been discussed for the UFC’s upcoming White House event in June.
At 38 years old, Usman is looking at one final push.
GSP’s advice? Make the run… but don’t stay too long.
St-Pierre famously walked away twice both times on top:
2013: Vacated the welterweight title on a 12-fight win streak
2017: Returned, moved up in weight, submitted Michael Bisping for the middleweight crown
Retired again as a two-division champion, 13 straight wins, no losses to close out his career
GSP says that part of finishing strong is strategic — not just physical.
“Not only is it better for your health… but business-wise, your stock is worth a lot. When you leave as champion, the opportunities come to you.”
He also warned what happens if fighters hang around too long.
“If you end up losing one, two, three fights straight… that money you could’ve made, and those opportunities, disappear.”
GSP stressed what every aging fighter wrestles with: ego.
“You feel like you’re leaving money on the table. ‘I can do one more.’ That’s your ego talking.”
Usman is still competitive, still dangerous, and still capable of beating elite names. A title shot against Makhachev or another high-profile bout could define his comeback.
But GSP’s message is clear: Make the last run. Make it meaningful. Then walk away with your legacy untouchable. Time is undefeated in combat sports.
