Is Paddy Pimblett Overrated?

Paddy Pimblett has fired back at Islam Makhachev after the former lightweight champion played down his career achievements.

Pimblett, who is being linked with a title shot against current UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria next, is 7-0. His best wins came against Michael Chandler at UFC 314 in April and King Green at UFC 304 in July 2024. Chandler has two UFC wins from seven, while Green has 12 UFC losses on his record.

In contrast, Islam has secured two wins over Alexander Volkanovski and a victory against Dustin Poirier, who are both much bigger names. Makhachev is also chasing a second belt when he takes on Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 this month. However, the UFC is also built on making the best commercially viable fights that are out there. Pimblett is someone who has acquired a big fan base, as Paddy shut down Islam’s claims.

“I hope JDM absolutely punches his little head in. I hope JDM batters him. I think JDM’s a much better boxer. If he can keep it on the feet then he will absolutely batter him, and I hope he does.”I’ve beaten Bobby Green, someone who I beat faster than you, you little bum. So, how about that one, Islam? Get back down to lightweight and I’ll punch your little head in as well,” Pimblett said

The Reality

Pimblett’s only win over a ranked opponent was against Green. In contrast, title contenders typically amass wins over multiple top-five opponents. Giving Pimblett a title shot over more established contenders like Justin Gaethje or Arman Tsarukyan would reward popularity over proven competitive achievement, potentially diminishing the credibility of the belt. Makhachev himself earned his title shot by defeating clear-cut top-ten fighters like Dan Hooker and Thiago Moisés, and subsequently defended it against pound-for-pound names like Alexander Volkanovski and Dustin Poirier. Pimblett has not defeated a single fighter of that level.

The primary reason Pimblett should receive a title shot is the immense commercial viability he brings to the event.  Pimblett has acquired a massive, loyal, and vocal fan base, making his events guaranteed sellers. His presence on a pay-per-view card drastically increases its potential revenue. The UFC has a long history of fast-tracking popular fighters with market appeal over strictly ranked contenders (Conor McGregor is the prime example). Pimblett’s undefeated UFC run, combined with his unique personality and aggressive style, makes him a draw.
