Islam Makhachev Recalls Struggles After Sole MMA Loss

Islam Makhachev has been on one of the most dominant runs in UFC history. The loss that preceded all of it is something he rarely discusses in this kind of depth. His loss to Adriano Martins back in 2015 was a first-round TKO that left a mark that went well beyond the record books. Makhachev opened up about what that period actually felt like from the inside.

Makhachev said losing was very hard for him. It took a long time before he felt okay again. During that time, many things happened, and he kept thinking about himself. He wondered why everything hurt so much. But those bad days helped him get better. He came back stronger, learned many things from that tough time, and became the first Dagestani double champion.

“Back when I lost, it took me quite a while to recover. I was thinking about why it was a hard time for me. I came back, and those meldonium fairy tales happened. It was a hard time for me. I was thinking a lot back then, questioning myself, but it made me grow as a fighter,” Makhachev said.

What makes the quote valuable is the honesty about the recovery process. Not the physical recovery but the mental one. Questioning himself, sitting with the loss for longer than he expected, working through it rather than around it. That process is what he credits for the growth that followed.

The version of Makhachev we see today was built during the hard times he’s describing. The loss happened once. What he did with it happened every day after.

Ilia Topuria Claims Islam Makhachev’s Only Loss Makes Him Look Vulnerable

Topuria isn’t buying the idea that Islam Makhachev is untouchable. He never has been, and he has a specific piece of history to back that up. It seems like Ian Garry is the next possible challenger for Makhachev’s welterweight title. Recently, Topuria was asked about the Irishman’s chances. His response was generous toward Garry, citing Makhachev’s career that proves the ceiling exists.

It’s the fight business everyone has chances, especially for someone like Ian Garry. He’s been able to collect a lot of experience in his UFC run, and I see him with a lot of chances. We’ve already seen Islam get knocked out before, so why not for a second time,” Topuria said.

Makhachev is not unbeatable. Topuria just reminded everyone that the proof is already on the record. Indeed, now it will be interesting to see what happens if Garry fights Makhachev.
