Alex Pereira’s push to fight retired legend Jon Jones is picking up steam, and it has a major backer in a fellow UFC legend.
Pereira has already staked his claim for a spot at next year’s UFC White House event, and there’s only one opponent he wants: the former two-division champion.
There have been rumours of Pereira moving up to heavyweight to face Britain’s Tom Aspinall, but his focus remains firmly on Jones. There’s no question which fight would draw more attention.
A UFC commentator recently weighed in too, saying the time is right for the promotion to make it happen. It would be an instant classic between two legends of the sport.
Long-time UFC commentator Joe Rogan is fully behind a potential clash between Pereira and Jones, already looking forward to seeing the matchup take place in Washington next year.
Rogan has also been building anticipation for the potential fight, claiming that it would be one of the biggest matchups ever seen inside the Octagon.
“If Jon (Jones) really thinks he’s gonna fight Alex Pereira, he’s getting ready,” Rogan said on his podcast. “He’s at least getting ready in his mind. The big-money fight is Alex and Jon Jones at the White House.”
Rogan continued: “Make it a 225 [pound] fight. You don’t have to make it for a title. Make it the bad m———– upper-edition [title]. The Jon Jones [versus] Alex Pereira fight would probably be the biggest fight in human history.
“In MMA — as a matchup, you’ve got the greatest of all time in Jon Jones, and arguably the most destructive striker who has ever competed [in Pereira].”
Jon Jones hasn’t stepped into the Octagon since his win over Stipe Miocic nearly a year ago, a fight that ended up being his first and only title defence as heavyweight champion.
His retirement came earlier this year, with talk of a potential bout against Tom Aspinall still lingering as he walked away from the sport.
After Pereira’s win at UFC 309, Dana White made it clear he wasn’t interested in booking him against Jones. The UFC president pointed to Jones’ dominance as the main reason for staying away from the matchup.
Pereira has not been shy about calling out Jon Jones again following his win over Jamahal Hill. It is clear that is what is next on his agenda.
