Joshua Van proved he’s more than just a striker. He’s a champion. Van delivered a statement performance at UFC 328, stopping Tatsuro Taira in the fifth round to retain his title in what instantly enters the Fight of the Year conversation.
Taira came out aggressive, immediately imposing his grappling with a powerful early takedown and dominant control on the ground. Time and again, he dragged Van to the canvas. Time and again, Van got back up.
The fight became a classic clash of styles:
Despite spending extended moments on the ground, Van never stopped fighting to return to his feet and once there, he made Taira pay. A brutal right hand in the second round dropped Taira, nearly ending the fight early.
As the fight wore on, damage began to accumulate. Taira continued to wrestle, even securing mount in later rounds, but his effectiveness faded as Van’s pace and punishment increased.
Van’s jab repeatedly snapped Taira’s head back, while his combinations opened cuts and visibly wore down the challenger.

In the fifth round, Van closed the show. A devastating combination to the body slowed Taira, and moments later, a flurry upstairs sent him crashing to the canvas. Referee Vitor Ribeiro stepped in at 1:32 of Round 5. It was over.
After the fight, Van didn’t hold back. “It feels damn good to be the champion again,” Van said. “As soon as I got to the body, it was over.” He also called out Alexandre Pantoja, reigniting a rivalry that ended prematurely due to injury. “Pantoja, you better get your s*** right… we can run it back.”
With this win, Joshua Van:
And perhaps most importantly proved he can win under any circumstances.
Against one of the division’s most dangerous grapplers, Van didn’t just survive. He adapted, he
punished. He finished. And now, the flyweight division officially belongs to him.
