For most athletes, life after retirement is supposed to be less demanding than the grind of professional competition. For Khabib Nurmagomedov, however, the transition from the UFC to the business world has brought a completely different set of challenges.
The former UFC lightweight champion recently reflected on the difficulties he has faced since stepping away from MMA in 2020. Speaking candidly about the past six years, Nurmagomedov explained that managing businesses, schedules, and responsibilities has often felt harder than preparing for a fight.
“Honestly, the last six years haven’t been easy,” Khabib said. “I’ve been managing several businesses, my schedule, my time — so many different things.” Nurmagomedov retired with a perfect 29-0 professional record after defeating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254. He has since focused on coaching, business ventures, and promoting the next generation of fighters.
“Life as a fighter was much better because you’re on your own,” he said. “You step into the cage and do what you’ve been doing your whole life.”
Khabib says it was easier being an MMA fighter than doing business because it's not as fair as fighting:

Despite his success outside the cage, Khabib admitted that being an active fighter felt far more straightforward. According to him, fighting was built on a simple and fair principle: two athletes enter the cage, and the better competitor wins. Years of training prepared him for that environment, and the rules were clear for everyone involved.
In Khabib’s opinion, what makes business even trickier than fighting is the lack of certainty in the world of business. The Dagestani star explained that while the Octagon has established rules and consequences, the business world can be unpredictable.
Earlier as well, Khabib once admitted that business is often tough, as many people do not play by the rules. Since retirement, Nurmagomedov has remained active across several ventures. He has worked as a coach, invested in businesses, and expanded commercial interests.
Even with those responsibilities, Khabib’s comments make it clear that he still prefers the clarity that came with competition. Inside the cage, success depended on preparation and performance. Outside of it, there are far more variables that cannot always be controlled.
For a man who built his reputation on mastering one of the toughest sports in the world, that unpredictability may be the hardest opponent he has faced since retirement.
