Alex Gould/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

UFC has numerous superstars within its divisions. Whether it’s the light heavyweight division and Jon Jones, or Khabib Nurmagomedov in the lightweight division, the promotion is predicated on having memorable superstars. That’s no different with Anderson Silva.

The Brazilian fighter has made a living out of dominating the middleweight division, taking down foes such as Chael Sonnen and Vitor Belfort. His dominance resulted in holding the longest UFC title reign in history as the UFC Middleweight Champion (2,457 days).

What made the “Spider” unique in his line of work? How does Silva stand among his peers in the octagon? The UFC Hall of Famer has had an incredible career, satisfying fans with his diverse fighting style and impeccable technique. Here’s a look at what made the Brazilian legend a trailblazer.

Anderson Silva’s Profile

Anderson Silva didn’t have the best setting growing up in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Growing up in a poverty-stricken family, he spent most of his time with his aunt and uncle. He practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with his fellow children, making him adept at the art.

Of course, that led to him achieving numerous accolades, including becoming the UFC Middleweight Champion for over seven years. Imagine how much has changed in seven years! Two election cycles have gone by with a new president in the United States shifting the landscape.

Overall, Silva was best known for his impeccable technique. He mastered the art of muay thai, wrestling, and Jiu-Jitsu. In turn, it’s given him a remarkable career with a record of 34-11 with one no-contest. The Brazilian legend also had 23 knockouts in his career, making him deadly with his aforementioned technique.

Anderson Silva Vs. Chael Sonnen

Perhaps his most well-documented rivalry is with Chael Sonnen, who already has a boxing match with Anderson Silva in Brazil. Both fighters have a rivalry that stems far from the boxing ring, though. Two of Silva’s title defenses were against Sonnen, with the Brazilian middleweight emerging as the victor both times.

The first fight was a submission victory for Silva at UFC 117, where he put Sonnen away with a triangle choke hold in the fifth round. After the bout on August 7, 2010, the two would face off two years later at UFC 148. Once again, Silva was the victor, defeating his opponent via punches in the second round.

With the two rivals fighting one more time on June 15, it will bring back some ‘member berries for MMA fans and passionate fighters alike. Memories of incredible fights for the UFC Middleweight Championship will be relived, only in boxing form. Who will win? Stay tuned.

Where Is Anderson Silva Now?

As mentioned earlier, Anderson Silva has his boxing fight against Chael Sonnen on June 15. Of course, this isn’t the first time the Brazilian MMA legend has dabbled in the sport. In fact, he’s incorporated the art into his fighting style during his UFC career, making him a well-rounded fighter.

Silva has also faced off against the likes of Jake Paul (loss via unanimous decision), Tito Ortiz (won via knockout in the first round), and Julio Chavez Jr. (Silva won via split decision). The “Spider” has adapted well in the ring, with a 3-2 record for his troubles.

Anderson Silva will be known as the trailblazer for various Brazilian MMA fighters. Whether that’s Alex Pereira, Jose Aldo, or Charles Oliveira, the “Spider” has contributed to the UFC sphere in many ways. He will be remembered as a versatile fighter who could pummel his opponents in more ways than one.
