Lerone Murphy believes vicious UFC 319 win sparked something in him ahead of clash against Alexander Volkanovski

Longtime UFC featherweight prospect Lerone Murphy scored one of the craziest knockouts of all time this past Saturday.

On Saturday, the premier promotion returned to the Windy City for the first time since 2019 for UFC 319, headlined by a middleweight title fight between Dricus Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev.

However, it was the co-main event between Lerone Murphy and UFC debutant Aaron Pico that stole the headlines after the Brit scored Knockout of the Year in the first round.

Despite his strong start, Pico was met with a vicious spinning back elbow that instantly put his lights out and left him stiff on the canvas.

Murphy explains why he practiced spinning elbow ahead of Pico clash

Following what is likely the biggest win of his career thus far, ‘The Miracle’ called for a featherweight title shot against Alexander Volkanovski, and his wish was immediately granted as Volkanovski responded.

Despite still holding an undefeated record, Murphy’s win was explained as a ‘coming out party’ by UFC boss Dana White, who seemed open to the idea of him fighting for the title next.

And although the technique that Murphy used to score the knockout may have seemed like a fluke, the Brit has explained why he continuously practiced the technique before the fight.

“I was doing it a lot more than that, I just thought where he shoots and puts his head and he often leads with his head, like he jumps into range, and I knew it would work,” Murphy told Ariel Helwani.

“I actually knew it would work, I knew that technique would be the one to finish him and that’s why I started with a spinning back kick because I knew he would’ve watched my previous fights and knew that’s what I like to throw.

“I started with one of them and then when he walked in you can see that he braces, thinking a spinning back kick is coming and the elbow caught him,” Murphy explained.

Murphy believes he will knock Volkanovski out after getting the taste for it

Throughout his undefeated run in the UFC, Murphy has only ever picked up two finishes outside of this past Saturday, when he knocked out Ricardo Ramos and Makwan Amirkhani.

And now, after getting the taste for the knockout, Murphy believes he will knock Volkanovski out when they eventually fight for the title.

“Volkanovski is one of the best to ever do it but I think I’m gonna get the finish, I think that’s just sparked something in me where I want to kill again,” Murphy added.
