Islam Makhachev has identified Carlos Prates as the most deserving contender for his next welterweight title defense.
Speaking on the Paramount+ post-fight show after retaining his belt against Ian Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia, the Russian champion cited the Brazilian's recent activity as the deciding factor over other candidates, per Sherdog. Prates attended the event alongside fellow contender Michael Morales.
The champion dismissed the case for Shavkat Rakhmonov, who has not competed since December 2024 due to injuries, and questioned Morales's inactivity despite his unbeaten record. "If you ask me today, Shavkat [Rakhmonov] is not fighting; Prates is still fighting, still active," Makhachev said. "Morales also is good, but I don't remember the last time he fought. If you ask who is more deserving, I think Carlos Prates."
Prates carries a 24-7 record and has strung together four consecutive finishes since losing to Garry in April 2025, including stoppages of Geoff Neal, Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena. Both Morales and Rakhmonov remain undefeated.
The UFC has not announced Makhachev's next title defense.
