McGregor vs Holloway Official
[NETWORK PROPERTY]-USA TODAY NETWORK

The UFC has officially confirmed that Conor McGregor is coming back on July 11, headlining UFC 329 against Max Holloway in a welterweight main event.

The announcement ends months of speculation about when and how McGregor would return following nearly five years away from competition. His last outing was at UFC 264 in July 2021, when he broke his leg during a second consecutive loss to Dustin Poirier — an injury that raised serious questions about whether he would compete again at all.

Holloway and McGregor met once before — in Boston in August 2013, a three-round featherweight decision that McGregor won in the early stages of both men's UFC careers.

Reports earlier in the build-up suggested McGregor's team had pushed for a three-round fight, which would have broken with the tradition of five-round main events. That request was rejected and the bout is confirmed as five rounds.

The social media exchange between the two fighters set the tone quickly. Holloway announced the fight on X with "July 11 Return of the MAX." McGregor responded in the manner his fans would have expected: "I'm gonna son you, child.
