Championship Fights in the UFC are typically evenly matched, with fighters earning a shot at the champion based on their performances. However, there is always a betting favorite and an underdog going into a fight. The favorite is usually the fighter with the better resume and more finishes in their record. Despite this, sometimes the underdog pulls off an upset and turns into a fan favorite.
Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping recently revealed his distaste for Islam Makhachev being the favorite against welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena . The superfight is set to headline the UFC 322 event on November 15th. As such, Bisping believed that Maddalena was being heavily underestimated and could match up to Makhachev’s dominating wrestling prowess.
The crazy thing is that Islam Makhachev is quite a sizable favorite. I think that’s a little bit disrespectful to Jack Della Maddalena. The man’s on an 18-fight win streak, he just beat Belal Muhammad, he defended all the takedowns there, he’s beaten all the grapplers before. If Islam were to stand with Jack, that would be a bad idea. Jack’s boxing and the footwork that’s associated with boxing are going to be very advantageous. Don’t be surprised if Jack gets it done.

Bisping believed that Maddalena was a better striker than Makhachev, and it would not end well for the Dagestani if he were to stand his ground. He also mentioned that the Australian native has gotten the best of grapplers in the past, hinting at his title fight against former champion Belal Muhammad at UFC 315. Maddalena had stepped into the fight on short notice in place of an injured Shavkat Rakhmonov.
Makhachev moved up to the welterweight division after vacating his lightweight belt in May 2025. However, there have been numerous concerns regarding his transition to the 170-pound division. His coach, Javier Mendez, has revealed that if Makhachev loses to Maddalena, he would have to climb the ladder back as Ilia Topuria has already taken over his lightweight championship.
While Makhachev remains confident in his ability to defeat JDM and fulfil his dream, other welterweight contenders have shown worry. Welterweight contender Sean Brady recently voiced his concern about Makhachev’s plans after winning the welterweight gold. He believed that the division would be put on hold if the Dagestani star decides to go back for his belt in a superfight against Topuria.
Bisping also reminded fans about JDM’s 18-fight win streak and undefeated status in the UFC, with six out of his eight official fights ending in a finish. Maddalena possesses a formidable boxing arsenal, featuring crisp strikes that deliver exceptional knockout power. However, a black belt in BJJ allows him to tackle his opponents on the ground as well. It will be interesting to see how JDM uses his arsenal at UFC 322.
Former UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira was a fan favorite and had a generational run in the UFC during his prime. However, he had to be stripped of his lightweight gold at UFC 274 due to missing weight. Oliveira defeated Justin Gaethje that night and hoped to prove himself and regain his championship in the next fight.
However, his plans were shattered after Islam Makhachev submitted him in the second round of their fight at UFC 280. Oliveira was on an 11-fight win streak and looked unbeatable in his title performances. Ever since the loss to the Dagestani phenom, ‘Do Bronx’ is 2-2 in his last four fights and has failed to maintain a winning streak.
The Brazilian star lost his last title shot to Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 as he was knocked out in the first round itself. He recently appeared on the “Full Violence” podcast and covered recent UFC bouts, fighters’ training updates, and key matchups in multiple weight classes. When the conversation turned to November 15, 2025, his focus centered on Islam Makhachev facing Maddalena.
Maddalena has a very complicated game because he is a guy who doesn’t come out to knockout fast, he comes to hurt you little by little. I think Islam is going to do very well in this weight, right? Now, he’s going to be much stronger. It’s a game where you have to grab him and put him down. If [JDM] will let Islam grab him and put him down, it’s over.

UFC 322, which is set for Madison Square Garden, promises to be a high-stakes, action-packed event. Makhachev’s move up in weight presents an opportunity to become a two-division champion. Oliveira’s advice highlights the critical importance of strategy and defense for Jack Della Maddalena in this matchup. Fans are now even more aware of the fight’s stakes and the potential path to victory.
