Some people are not convinced by Nate Diaz’s story about how his mixed martial arts return came together.
The fan favourite is set to make his comeback on May 16, where he will be one of the top stars competing at Netflix’s very first MMA event.
Diaz hasn’t fought since leaving the UFC back in September 2022, and will face Mike Perry at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
Many were disappointed not to see the Stockton star returning to the Octagon, especially after he revealed the door was open to do so.
After his Netflix bout was announced, Diaz said he had turned down the UFC’s offer to make his return after three years out of action.
He claimed that the promotion was offering him more money than he is getting to fight Perry and that it would have come with a Conor McGregor trilogy attached. The 38-year-old said he wasn’t interested in fighting the Irishman after such a long layoff.
Matt Brown isn’t convinced.
Dana White responded to Diaz’s comments by saying it was likely Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions came forward with an unmatchable offer. The former welterweight believes White over Diaz in this case.
“Money talks,” Brown told MMA Fighting. “He’s making more money with this Netflix fight than he would with the UFC. That’s why he’s not fighting Conor in the UFC.”
“I lean towards believing Dana on this. He got an offer he couldn’t refuse. Now how Nate’s spinning it with the way the contract is structured, maybe there’s something behind the scenes under some layers that we’re not privy to just yet. But there’s no way he’s not making more money.
Brown added: “I don’t believe it for a second that he’s not making more money with this Netflix deal. However, that plays out, his bank account ends up with more money from this fight than it does in the UFC or he doesn’t take the fight.
“He understands this is prize fighting and he picks the highest bidder.”
Perry has since left grappling behind and made his name as a top figure in bare-knuckle boxing under BKFC.
