Nate Diaz has never had much patience for the gap between what people say and what they have actually done. And his thoughts on retired fighters turned analysts delivered that philosophy in the most direct language available to him. As per him, the fighters shouldn’t become analysts once they are done with their careers.
Diaz believes becoming an analyst is a betrayal of a fighter’s identity. In his view, a true fighter does not spend his post-career years sitting in a studio chair and breaking down other people’s performances. He feels that anyone who truly understands the sport from the inside would not choose that path.
“I have a problem with fighters who start analyzing…is that what it’s called? Like analysts or try to think they’re Ariel Helwani or some s---…Then what they do they go on give criticism. Bro, you are never even a fighter if that’s what you do you a b----. You know it all, then what the f--- happen in your career?” Diaz said (video here; warning: viewer discretion advised).
The irony does not seem to bother Diaz. Several prominent retired fighters who became analysts have made the same kind of observations about their own careers. Those are the very comments he is now criticizing. He believes fighters who pick up a microphone instead of continuing to compete make a choice that reveals who they really were all along.
However, he sees Chael Sonnen as an exception. In his view, the analyst in Sonnen was always there. It is a reminder that analysis is cheap and competition is expensive. And that the people loudest in their criticism of active fighters are often the ones whose own careers contain the most unanswered questions. Meanwhile, the Stockton Native is set to fight against Mike Perry.
The Stockton native returns to competition on May 16 against Mike Perry on the MVP card streaming live on Netflix, nearly three years after his last UFC appearance against Tony Ferguson at UFC 279 in September 2022. That fight, a unanimous decision win, was his farewell to the promotion he spent the better part of two decades building his legend inside.
What followed was a period of free agency. He also explored boxing. At the same time, his public comments kept him in the spotlight. They reminded everyone that Diaz was still very much part of the combat sports conversation, even without an active fight contract.
