Paulo Costa has made one thing clear following his successful move to 205 pounds he’s hunting champions. After dismantling previously unbeaten Azamat Murzakanov with a third-round knockout at UFC 327, Costa is riding new momentum and believes his future could lie among the elite at light heavyweight. But whether it’s at 205 or a return to 185 pounds, one name stands above the rest.
Paulo Costa has long been linked to Khamzat Chimaev, and that hasn’t changed. With Chimaev set to defend his title against Sean Strickland at UFC 328 on May 9, Costa is closely watching and waiting. “I wish he comes to 205,” Costa said. “I’m gonna be here with my arms open, waiting for him.” If the fight were to happen at light heavyweight, Costa is confident the outcome would be decisive. “On 205, I’m a monster,” Costa said. “I don’t need to burn any muscle. I don’t need to sacrifice anything to make 185. At 205, I have full power… that’s gonna be tragic for him.”
The move up in weight appears to have rejuvenated Costa. No longer drained from cutting to middleweight, he’s embracing the physical advantages that come with fighting at his natural size.
Costa described light heavyweight as “a good place to stay,” suggesting his body will only improve with time in the division. Still, he hasn’t ruled out a return to 185 pounds especially if it means securing a high-profile clash with Chimaev for the title.
Costa also inserted himself into another intriguing possibility a potential appearance at the UFC’s rumored White House event on June 14. He even volunteered to face Josh Hokit should Derrick Lewis withdraw from the card, signaling his willingness to stay active and take on all challengers.

Beyond titles, Paulo Costa is chasing something bigger legacy-defining rivalries. He believes his ongoing feud with Chimaev has the potential to mirror iconic clashes from MMA history. Specifically referencing the legendary battles between Wanderlei Silva and Quinton Jackson. “I think we need that,” Costa said. “I’m the new blood in this division.”
Paulo Costa also acknowledged the impact of Alex Pereira, noting the Brazilian star’s success at light heavyweight before moving on from the division.
With momentum, confidence, and options. Costa finds himself in a strong position whether he stays at 205 pounds or drops back down for a title shot at middleweight. But one thing is certain. He wants Khamzat Chimaev and he believes their collision could define the next era of UFC rivalries.
