Poirier on McGregor After UFC 329

Dustin Poirier watched Conor McGregor's UFC 329 return and came away with questions that go beyond the knee injury.

Poirier offered an assessment of McGregor's physical condition that was specific and pointed. He does not believe the bloated appearance he noticed was simply a byproduct of the weight class.

"Definitely he looked bloated. I thought his face looked a little shiny. Under his eyes looked a little full. His cheeks looked full. It could be because he's living an unhealthy lifestyle. I don't feel like 15 pounds would make your face look that bloated. I don't know what's going on. His body looked fit. His face looked unhealthy. When you don't live the healthiest lifestyle, your body's more susceptible to injuries,” Poirier

The observation carries a particular weight coming from Poirier. The two men have shared the octagon three times, most recently in July 2021 when McGregor broke his leg in their trilogy fight — the injury that began the five-year absence that ended at UFC 329. Poirier knows what McGregor looks like in competitive shape, and his reading of his latest fight was that something was different.

McGregor himself acknowledged in the build-up to UFC 329 that alcohol had become a significant problem during his years away from the sport, describing how launching Proper No. Twelve whiskey had surrounded him with the product at a time when he was not competing. He framed his return as part of a broader personal recovery, centred on faith and sobriety. What Poirier is clear about is where he believes McGregor's MMA career stands.

"With the record-breaking career he's had, I would just hate to see him be a freakshow fighter like that, and only come out for these exhibitions. That's not real fighting to me. I hope he stays on the track in his normal day-to-day life,” Poirier

McGregor has vowed to return. Poirier's assessment suggests the more difficult question is not whether he can get back in the cage, but what shape he will be in when he does — and whether the body is still capable of executing what the mind is planning.
