Quillan Salkilld submitted Mateusz Gamrot in the first round at UFC Vegas 120 on Saturday night and immediately called for a ranked opponent in the lightweight top five.
The finish shocked observers who expected Gamrot, one of the division's elite grapplers, to control the mat exchanges. Instead, Salkilld beat him at his own game and stopped the Polish veteran inside five minutes, per MMA Fighting.
MMA Fighting's Mike Heck and Alexander K. Lee discussed the victory on their post-fight show and debated whether Salkilld will land the step up he wants. They also speculated what might have happened had Salkilld called out PFL champion and newly minted free agent Usman Nurmagomedov instead of chasing a ranked UFC name.
The co-main event saw Diego Ferreira beat Billy Quarantillo, while Alexia Thainara climbed the strawweight ladder with a win over Amanda Lemos earlier on the card.
UFC 330 takes place next weekend with an updated main card following the APEX show.
