The UFC BMF belt is a random title that has become a mainstay in the promotion’s plans. Most championship belts signify who the best in the world is. The BMF belt represents the “Baddest Motherfer”. Now you might be thinking that the two are the same. Well, there are many paths to victory in the fight game.
A fighter who uses the lay-and-pray approach might win the fight, but maybe not the fan support. The BMF belt represents fighters who deliver unforgettable and exciting performances. It usually involves popular fan favorites with cult-like followings.
The BMF belt was introduced to us on November 2nd, 2019. The idea had come about after a post-fight interview with Nate Diaz, in which he claimed that the UFC was lacking in entertaining fighters. He credited Jorge Masvidal and called for a West Coast versus East Coast “gangster” matchup. Masvidal had just come off the fastest knockout in UFC history and was riding high.
The fight was slated for UFC 244 at the “World’s Most Famous Arena,” Madison Square Garden. To add more hoopla to the spectacle, the winner would get the belt wrapped around them by the one and only Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. The fight itself was entertaining, yet one-sided for Masvidal. The fight, though, ultimately ended in controversy due to a doctor’s stoppage.
Just as fast as the belt arrived, it departed. The belt was not seen or heard from again for several years. The UFC decided to resurrect it in 2023 for a rematch between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier. The two were regarded as some of the sport’s most entertaining fighters. Their first fight had already delivered one of the greatest lightweight scraps recorded. This matchup made the two perfect candidates for the BMF title.
At UFC 291, Gaethje landed a stunning head-kick knockout and became the second official BMF champion. The belt had been brought back to relevance, and it was time to capitalize. In 2024, he would defend the belt in the T-Mobile Arena at UFC 300. His opponent would be the just as exciting and just as popular, Max “Blessed” Holloway. While Gaethje was known for his brawler style and knockout power, Holloway put up video game numbers in terms of volume. He was also jumping up a weight class to the lightweight division.
The fight was a good yet one-sided fight with Holloway controlling the octagon with his pace and footwork. In the final seconds of the last round, Holloway pointed to the center of the octagon to signal Gaethje to meet him there and “go for broke”. Moments later, Holloway landed a devastating right hook with one second remaining. This moment became one of the most iconic in the sport’s history.
The BMF title will once again be on the line at UFC 326 at the T-Mobile Arena. Holloway will face fellow fan favorite Charles Oliveira. The fighters first fought back in 2015, when Hollaway won due to Oliveira’s neck injury. Since then, the two have been elevated to champions and stars in their respective divisions. It’s another one of those matchups that has fans excited to see, but sad that someone has to lose.
The BMF championship has gained respect over the years and has become a coveted piece of hardware that many fighters want to fight for. The belt celebrates the grit and excitement that its fighters display. What was once a promotional gimmick is now viewed as a true badge of honor. The BMF belt continues to highlight the sport’s fearless competitors and remind us why we love MMA.
