Tom Aspinall was forced to think about the worst-case scenario after UFC 321.
Ciryl Gane’s double eye poke left the UFC heavyweight champion unable to see out of his right eye Saturday night.
After the fight was declared a no-contest, Tom Aspinall was transported to a local hospital in Abu Dhabi.
The 32-year-old was ultimately told the doctors ‘didn’t find anything dangerous’ – but more eye tests will be needed once he returns home to the UK.
Britain’s biggest MMA legend, Michael Bisping, famously continued fighting after going blind in one eye.
It worked out well for ‘The Count’ as he went on to win the UFC middleweight title by knocking out Luke Rockhold in June 2016.
However, Tom Aspinall insisted that type of injury would immediately end his combat sports career.
The best big man in MMA contemplated retirement as he sat in the hospital waiting for his injured eyes to be checked over.
“I really respect what Bisping’s done,” Aspinall said.
“But he’s done more than I would.
“I won’t carry on fighting with one eye. No chance. No chance.
“Let’s see what they say.”
Dana White doesn’t usually talk about what fight is next immediately after one of his events.
However, the UFC CEO quickly confirmed Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane will rematch as soon as possible.
“Total pain in the a– but yeah,” White said when asked if he’ll book Aspinall vs Gane 2 after UFC 321.
“It’s unfortunate it ended the way that it did, and yes, I think that there probably will be a lot more interest in the rematch after they say, you know, [Gane] had Tom bloodied up and Tom didn’t want to continue in the fight.
“So the rematch is very interesting… Right here, right now, being honest – I never do this when it comes to talking about what the next fight is going to happen – the rematch is what makes sense.”
It’s now just a matter of waiting for Aspinall to receive a diagnosis from UK doctors before the UFC can begin planning the second fight with Gane.
