Since signing for the UFC, Mingyang Zhang has looked relatively flawless in the Octagon with three first round finishes.
This coming Saturday, the premier promotion returns to Shanghai for UFC Shanghai, headlined by Chinese light heavyweight prospect Mingyang Zhang and Johnny Walker.
Walker is looking to snap a two fight losing skid, having suffered back-to-back KO losses for the first time in his career.
Zhang, on the other hand, is looking to score his fourth win since earning a contract in the UFC from the Road to UFC, which would likely see him climb up the 205lb rankings.
The 27-year-old’s promotional debut came in February 2024 at UFC 298 when he took on Brendson Ribeiro.
‘Mountain Tiger’ showcased his scary knockout power when he knocked the Brazilian out in the first round, butchering him with hammer fists.
He was then matched up against Ozzy Diaz in the following November, once again scoring a huge first round knockout after landing an elbow and subsequent ground-and-pound.
Following what was another impressive performance, Zhang was then matched up against former light heavyweight title contender, Anthony Smith at UFC Kansas City earlier this year.
Early in the fight, the Chinese fighter showcased his kicking arsenal and speed advantage against ‘Lionheart’.
After chopping at Smith’s leg for almost the entire round, Zhang opened up a huge cut on the head of Smith when he landed a sharp elbow up close.
A failed takedown attempt by Smith saw Zhang end up on top where he began to rain down vicious ground-and-pound, making blood pour even more.
With ‘Lionheart’ lying in a pool of his own blood, Jason Herzog stepped in and called a stop to the fight as Zhang continued to just brutalize him with elbows.
Although at one point Walker was regarded as a potential future champion in the 205lb division, there is a chance that he is fighting for his job at UFC Shanghai.
With a loss against the 27-year-old Chinese prospect, it would mark four fights in a row that Walker failed to register a win, leaving his future in the promotion in doubt.
