There is growing concern over Marc Marquez’s future in MotoGP following his crash at Le Mans, but Ducati are standing by their statement that he remains under contract for the next two years.
The Spaniard underwent surgery on his right shoulder and foot on Sunday. Marquez was scheduled to have one on his shoulder anyway, due to the complications he has been facing in MotoGP this season.
The injury was made worse during a Sprint race accident at the French Grand Prix, where a heavy highside left him with a fractured foot. This has forced him out of the upcoming Barcelona round as well.
The defending champion is now beginning his rehabilitation, and he is confident that his recovery will not take too long.
However, questions about Marquez’s future continue to grow after another serious crash and injury. Some are starting to wonder if this could be the incident that leads him to step away from racing when his contract ends in 2026.
Marquez’s current contract with Ducati runs through 2026, but there’s growing belief that he’s already agreed to stay until the end of 2028. While nothing has been made official, Ducati’s communications team seemed to quietly confirm this behind the scenes.
The crash at Le Mans has sparked questions about whether Marquez might consider retiring when his contract ends in 2026. But speaking on the Paddock Pass Podcast, Neil Morrison reported that Ducati remain confident in his commitment through to 2028.
“We did bring this up to a member of the Ducati communications team yesterday, came up to sort of answer any questions that we had about his operation,” he said.
“And I did ask this question to them. Are you a little bit concerned that maybe Marc might just think this is one recovery too many after all he’s been through?
“And they said, ‘Well, he signed for two more years. He’s committed to 2027 and 2028, and the attitude that he was given off, according to them, was one of just like, ‘Right, let’s just come back from this and let’s get to it.”
Stay tuned for more updates on Marquez’s recovery and future plans as they develop.
The general belief is that Marquez has signed a deal with Ducati that keeps him there through 2028, reportedly agreed during February’s Sepang test.
But details around the agreement aren’t entirely clear, especially since Marquez himself has expressed hesitation about committing to two more years due to his ongoing injury issues.
Marquez has shown interest in testing the new 850cc bikes next season. Some think he might have flexibility built into his contract, possibly allowing him to leave Ducati as early as 2027.
There’s speculation he could be on a one-year deal with an option for a second year, depending on how he feels physically.
