Alex Bowman is officially back. The Hendrick Motorsports driver has been medically cleared to race at Bristol Motor Speedway after being sidelined with vertigo. His surprise return keeps his championship hopes alive, but the road ahead is steep.
Bowman took part in the Ten Tenths Motor Club road course in Concord, where he successfully ran an undisclosed number of laps. He followed that up on Wednesday with a pitstop practice, simulator testing, and a medical evaluation, before being deemed fit to return to racing.
On 9th April, 2026, Hendrick Motorsports made the official announcement on X, “Welcome back! @Alex_Bowman has been medically cleared and will race this weekend at Bristol.”

“It’s been tough being out of the car, but we all wanted to make sure I was 100% ready before returning. I feel really good, and I’m excited about being at the track with my team and getting back to racing,” Bowman said in an official statement.
Andrews, President and General Manager, Hendrick Motorsports, also reflected on Bowman’s commitment to returning and the way he has handled the situation.
He said, “He’s put a lot of work into his recovery and followed the medical team’s plan every step of the way. From the outset, our goal was to prioritize his health and have him return when he was fully recovered and medically cleared. We’re looking forward to seeing Alex back in his race car this weekend.”
Alex Bowman experienced symptoms at the Circuit of the Americas, where many drivers struggled with the extremely hot weather. He entered the garage after 70 laps and was soon given medical assistance.
Myatt Snider, the spotter for FOX Sports that day, was brought in as Bowman’s relief driver, driving the No. 48 Chevrolet to a 36th-place finish.
Since then, Anthony Alfredo subbed for him in Phoenix, while Justin Allgaier, who is having a great season in the O’Reilly series, was roped in for the races at Las Vegas, Darlington, and Martinsville. Given his recent comments on struggling to juggle between the two series, he will feel particularly relieved by this development.
Bowman knows it will be an uphill battle for him in this season, as he currently occupies the 36th spot in the standings, with 23 points in his tally. In the three races he has appeared so far, he has finished 40th, 23rd, and 36th, respectively.
The upcoming races are going to be intense for Bowman. What are your thoughts on Alex Bowman’s comeback?
