Brad Keselowski Recalls Absurd NASCAR Moment That Changed Everything

Brad Keselowski might be one of NASCAR’s superstars, but he once lived through a moment that still doesn’t make sense on paper.

Despite winning early, he did not find long-term security with the team. And this strange turn is now one of the most defining stories of his career.

In a recent episode of NASCAR Live Wide Open, this is how the star himself described the situation: “I got a contract with Hendrick full-time and in the coming years, and I’ve won a race way before I should win a race in a part-time car. Nobody does that, right?” he said.

“And then I got a call from Rick Hendrick, and he wanted to meet, and I met with him, and he just basically said, ‘Hey, in very kind words, there’s no job here for you anymore.’ I was like, how did I win and get fired? That’s not how this was supposed to go”

Back in 2009, Keselowski stunned everyone with a Talladega win in just his fifth Cup start. Driving for Phoenix Racing while also running part-time with Hendrick Motorsports, this result was something rookies only dreamed about at the time.

Success came very early, but at the wrong time. As the team’s full-time lineup was already stacked, there was no space for a sudden breakout star like Keselowski.

However, that moment came as a turning point in Keselowski’s life. With doors closing at Hendrick, he knocked on the door of Roger Penske.

He approached the conversation with a focus on long-term stability, but that didn’t sit well initially, as such a demand from a young driver could have backfired.

The Gamble That Built a Champion’s Legacy

Keselowski’s move to Team Penske changed everything. By 2010, he had already become a full-time racer for the team.

The same driver who was once let go despite being a winner went on to win the 2012 Cup Series title. Since then, Brad Keselowski never had to look back and built a successful stint with Penske.

After more than a decade with Team Penske, Keselowski joined RFK Racing as a driver and co-owner, expanding his role from competing to shaping the team’s direction.

What looked like a setback became the foundation of Keselowski’s career, pushing him to bet on himself and leading to a championship run with Team Penske and a leadership role at RFK Racing.
