Chase Briscoe is not happy with Ross Chastain. Racing for position inside the top 10 of Sunday’s Viva Mexico 250 at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Chastain appeared to give Briscoe a shove as the Joe Gibbs Racing driver drove past him.
Briscoe took exception to the shove. He lashed out on Chastain over his radio.
“Fu*k that motherf***er,” Briscoe said, via Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic.
Briscoe addressed the incident after the race. He said that Chastain tried to spin him out.
“It’s just kind of how he races, I guess,” Briscoe told Prime Video after the race. “He just tried to spin me out. On that original restart, he door slammed me and then I finally caught back up to him after 10 or so laps. I barely got into him, and he tried to spin me out. Typical.”
By that point in the race, Chastain’s No. 1 Chevrolet didn’t have much left. In fact, he went from being on track to score a top 10 finish to falling all the way back to 16th. Briscoe, meanwhile, raced his way to an impressive P7 finish, his third top 5 in the last five races.
The top 10 finish is huge for Briscoe, who is competing to maintain his spot above the playoff cutline. With 10 regular season races remaining, Briscoe is in good shape to make it back to the postseason for the second consecutive season.
“We just had a really good Bass Pro Shops Toyota. It’s sickening getting torn up that early and all the adversity we had to go through because our car was really good,” Briscoe said. “I don’t know that we were good enough to beat Shane [van Gisbergen], but certainly, probably would have run better than seventh. It’s a testament to my guys. We could have given up at multiple points in the race and we continued to just fight. Appreciate them.”
