It is a big weekend for Daniel Suarez, the only Mexican driver in the Cup Series. The local hero has to meet high expectations as NASCAR’s top tier makes its debut at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Now, after an impressive showing in the Xfinity race, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has highlighted the pressure Suarez is facing ahead of the Cup race.
This is the first time the Cup Series is racing in Mexico City. The race is not only a challenge for drivers considering the high altitude of the circuit, at over 7,500 feet, but is also important for the Central American nation. NASCAR fans are able to experience the weekend in the country and embrace the local culture, something that is important for Daniel Suarez.
Dale Jr. pointed out that Suarez was filled with pride to see the sport make its way to his home country. The Trackhouse Racing star faces expectations from thousands of local fans who want to see him in Victory Lane on Sunday.
Moreover, the pressure did not just stick to the track for Daniel Suarez, Dale Earnhardt Jr. insisted that the Mexican driver wanted the entire garage to have a positive experience in the city. This certainly puts much more to worry about into the Chevrolet driver’s head compared to the rest of the competition.
Daniel is so proud to have his industry in Mexico City and have all of us here to see what Mexico City is about. Because he has a ton of pride in that. I know there’s a lot of pressure on him, to come here, to perform, to do well. And he wants everybody in the NASCAR industry to have a great experience. So I can’t imagine the things that are running through his mind just leading up to this weekend, much less on the race track, you know trying to race well.

The Mexican driver could not have asked for a better way to start his home weekend. On Saturday, Daniel Suarez defied all odds to clinch the win in the Xfinity race, driving a backup No. 9 Chevrolet after a wreck in Qualifying. This certainly put a smile on the 33-year-old’s race who would have not wanted to leave his country empty-handed.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was glad to see the Trackhouse star managed to win the race on Saturday. The NASCAR veteran asserted that this was not going to be enough for Daniel Suarez, who wants to win the Cup Series race as well. Moreover, Dale Jr. pointed out that this performance was a testament to Suarez’s capabilities, while also making his massive local fanbase happy.
So I was so thankful for him to be able to have a moment like he had today. I know he wants to win again tomorrow but I’m just so thankful that he got to show what he can do. And give everybody here in attendance something to cheer to be excited about and cheer for.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. added.
Certainly, Daniel Suarez will be hoping to repeat his Xfinity performance on Sunday. The 33-year-old could not ask for a better weekend if he manages to win the Cup race. However, this will be far from easy. Not only will Suarez face potential difficulties with the car, but will also need to battle it out against the frontrunners.
