Denny Hamlin had some interesting things to say about Ross Chastain‘s incident with Joey Logano during the Chicago Street Race. On the Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin was asked if NASCAR will fine Chastain for wrecking Logano late in the race.
“No, I don’t think they will,” Denny Hamlin said. “They don’t do that unless it’s me. Inconsistencies is the only consistency we have.”
NASCAR could fine Ross Chastain because Joey Logano said Chastain admitted that he wrecked him. “He admitted he wrecked me on purpose,” Logano told reporters post-race, per Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports. “He admitted it, which means he should get fined if he admittedly wrecked someone on purpose. That’s not OK. … It’s just typical Ross. He just sees red and does dumb stuff. That’s all. And that’s twice this year on road courses at the end of these things I’ve been cost by Ross. Just over it.”
Chastain earned a P10 at Chicago, and Logano finished 11th despite getting spun. After the race, the two drivers had words before going their separate ways.
Chastain was not available for comments after the race, but this isn’t the first time he had an issue with Logano. In March, the two drivers were competing at COTA, and Chastain contacted AJ Allmendinger into Logano. Chastain finished 12th while Logano finished 24th.
But why did Chastain go after Logano on Sunday? “So I went back and I was like, ‘Why was Ross mad at Joey?’ Joey didn’t do that, first of all,” NASCAR insider Jeff Gluck said on The Teardown podcast. “And it wasn’t like Brandon McReynolds, Ross’ spotter, came on and said, ‘The 22 just got you!’ He didn’t, I went back and listened.
“So finally, like five minutes later, they’re like, after that had already happened, they’re like, Brandon McReynolds is like, ‘Hey, just to let you know, that was the 2 who jacked up everybody there and did a kamikaze move.’ But too late then, because Ross had already dumped Logano. And that’s when (Ricky) Stenhouse got his damage, too. And then Stenhouse has a smashing watermelons gif on X afterwards.”
Both Chastain and Logano have won races this year, meaning they will battle in the playoffs at the end of August. We’ll see if they have any additional issues going forward.
