Indianapolis Motor Speedway proves treacherous in Brickyard 400 qualifying

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway took no prisoners during Saturday's NASCAR Cup Series qualifying session.

Turn 2 was especially treacherous, as multiple drivers hit the wall or had issues navigating the second corner of the 2.5-mile speedway.

Kyle Busch, Michael McDowell, John Hunter Nemechek, Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski were among those who had issues in the session.

Nemechek saw LEGACY Motor Club teammate Erik Jones top the speed chart early in qualifying, but the No. 42 snapped loose on the exit of both turns 1 and 2. On the exit of turn 2, Nemechek made significant contact with the outside wall.

Busch and Keselowski also scraped the wall during their qualifying runs, while Carson Hocevar got loose on the exit of turn 2 but avoided any contact.

The biggest moment of the session came when Hamlin — the last driver to make a qualifying attempt — spun and made heavy contact with the inside wall on the backstretch after the No. 11 Toyota also got loose on the exit of turn 2.

If qualifying is any indication, Sunday's race will be a hard-fought battle for all 39 drivers in the Brickyard 400 field.
