LONG POND, Pennsylvania — After being the fastest driver in Saturday's NASCAR Cup Series practice session at Pocono Raceway, William Byron had an excellent shot to nab a solid starting spot for Sunday's Great American Getaway 400.
That was until Byron's No. 24 spun in the tunnel turn and made heavy contact with the inside wall. Byron's time was officially 31st-fastest of the 33 cars that took time.

Despite the damage, the No. 24 team opted not to go to a backup car, deciding to instead repair the primary car.
"I got into (the tunnel turn) kind of neutral, I was okay in the middle, then I hit the bumps and the balance I had compounded thing," Byron said. "I felt like I was on the edge of being able to save it, and then I just tried to drive out of it and it was too far sideways.
"It sucks. I've had a lot of speed, so (we) just have to keep it going."
That could be easier said than done for Byron, who will have to make a charge through the back of the field if he wants to earn his second win of 2025.
"I feel like in years past, the wins have come a little bit easier but we weren't as dominant," Byron said prior to qualifying. "That's what we've been working on, figuring out some of the little details to close it out a little more. We still have one big win. I'm sure a lot of people would love to be in our position."
Byron's starting position is certainly unenviable, but if he has similar speed to what he's had over the last month, he'll drive his way to the front of the field in no time.
