The Stage 2 restart and the laps that immediately followed in Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway were filled with chaos. On Lap 58, Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin battled for sixth before things got tight coming off Turn 2.
The two made contact, Hamlin nearly going for a spin. Hamlin made an epic save, though he dropped to P11. Larson commented on the contact over his radio and encouraged Hamlin to make a change in his approach.

“Look out the fu*king windshield, Denny, instead of the fu*king mirror,” Larson said.
Like Hamlin, Larson lost some spots after the contact. It slowed him up, though Larson has since rebounded, running P4 as of Lap 68 when the red flag came out for a multi-car wreck.
Obviously, it wasn’t Hamlin’s plan to nearly take out himself and Larson. Things got crazy off the restart.
“Well, that was a fu*king disaster,” Hamlin said on the radio, via Davey Segal of SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
This isn’t the first time these two world class drivers have had a run-in on the racetrack. Larson and Hamlin had multiple incidents last season. Despite the frequency of which they came together, both denied they had a brewing rivalry.
“I don’t know. I mean, I wouldn’t agree or disagree. It comes and goes,” Larson said last June. “I feel like you know, we race well together at times, and there’s times when I feel like you know, he races me not the fairest, and I’m sure he feels the same way.
“So yeah, it’s not an ongoing rivalry, but there’s definitely weeks and stretches where it compiles. But hopefully we can move on from it soon, and I can get a little bit of respect from him.”
Perhaps Larson feels differently now. Whatever the case, both will continue to race at the front of the field. With that, you can expect fireworks from time to time.
