Chase Elliot is arguably the biggest name in NASCAR. The HMS star has won the title of the most popular driver in the field for seven years in a row. Many expected Elliot to stay at the top spot of fame for the foreseeable future. However, NASCAR’s latest figures indicate that he might be losing his crown to his own teammate.
NASCAR has released the top 15 ranking of merch sales in the 2025 season so far. The sport sits in the first spot with the most merch sales. Chase Elliot, who sat at the top of the list last year, even ahead of NASCAR, has been pushed down to third place, with his teammate Kyle Larson taking up the second spot. This comes as a major blow to Elliot, who seems to be fading away compared to Larson’s rise in popularity.
Larson has become a household name in NASCAR in recent years, with comparisons being drawn to F1’s Max Verstappen. The 32-year-old has also caught the public eye by his two attempts at the Indy 500. On the other hand, Chase Elliot has failed to create such a buzz around him in the past few months.
Elliot is followed by none other than Kyle Busch in fourth place, with Ross Chastain taking up the next spot. Other notable names in the list include Joey Logano, the Earnhardts, and Denny Hamlin. As per Sports Business Journal, the merchandise sales in NASCAR are breaking records. The sale figures at this year’s Coca Cola 600 were the highest since the 2010 season, hinting at a potential resurgence in the sport’s popularity.
Kyle Larson’s popularity advantage might be limited to merchandize figures. Social media, which has become an important tool in understanding the reach of any public figure, shows that Chase Elliot does have an edge over Larson on the internet.
Athlon Sports listed the top 10 most popular NASCAR drivers on social media. The list sums up a driver’s followers on four platforms- Instagram, X, Facebook, and YouTube. Chase Elliot has an impressive fanbase on the internet with a total of 1,947,300 followers across platforms. But this was not enough to defeat Kyle Busch, who tops this list with a grand total of 2,126,600 users, while Elliot sits in second place.
On the other hand, Kyle Larson only has a total of 1,378,800 followers across platforms, putting him in fourth place, even behind John Hunter Nemechek . While Denny Hamlin is not far behind Larson either.
In December, I produced my first list of the most popular NASCAR Cup Series drivers on social media. Now, six months later and halfway through the 2025 regular season, it's time for an update. pic.twitter.com/uylFn6v3TI

Though, the one drawback of this data is that the list does not calculate unique users. It is possible that many fans would be following drivers on different social media platforms, potentially becoming duplicates in the total sum. Nevertheless, it gives an idea about the kind of online presence drivers have, something that has become extremely important in recent years.
A large fanbase is important in NASCAR. Drivers with the highest popularity are able to lure better deals from sponsors, helping out their team’s finances. So far, Chase Elliot was considered to be the biggest name in the field, but it seems that Kyle Larson could soon steal this crown from his teammate.
