An incredible qualifying effort from NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Layne Riggs will be all for naught.
Riggs laid down the fastest lap of Truck Series qualifying for Friday's championship race at Phoenix Raceway, but thanks to a penalty earlier on Friday morning, he'll have to start at the rear of the field and serve a drive-through penalty after taking the green flag.
That bumps Riggs' Front Row Motorsports teammate in Chandler Smith to the pole position for Friday's 150-lap season finale (7:30 p.m. ET, FS1, NRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
Brent Crews will join Smith on the front row, with Tanner Gray, Kaden Honeycutt and Corey Heim rounding out the top-five. Rajah Caruth, defending Truck Series champion Ty Majeski, Gio Ruggiero, two-time series champion Ben Rhodes and Stefan Parsons will complete the top-10 starters.
Other notable qualifying efforts include Corey LaJoie in 12th, Daniel Hemric in 19th, Tyler Ankrum in 21st, Grant Enfinger in 23rd and three-time series champion Matt Crafton in 25th.
Mason Maggio (32nd) was the slowest driver to take time, while neither Caleb Costner nor Matt Mills made a qualifying lap.
Honeycutt was the fastest qualifier of the Championship 4, while Ankrum will have the toughest road to the title in regard to starting position.
Friday's Truck Series championship race at Phoenix will go green shortly after 7:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on Fox Sports 1, NRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
