Chase Briscoe scored a monumental victory off the track.
Following the Daytona 500, NASCAR penalized Briscoe for a spoiler violation. Briscoe and Joe Gibbs Racing lost 100 points and 10 playoff points, in addition to a $100,000 fine and four-game suspension to crew chief James Small.
On Wednesday, Briscoe and JGR won their appeal. The National Motorsports Appeals Panel restored the points and rescinded all other punishments.
Briscoe celebrated the ruling on social media.
"Biggest points day of my career! We’re back!" Briscoe wrote. "In all seriousness thank you to NASCAR for giving us the option to show our evidence and huge thank you to everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing who put in countless hours to put everything together."
Briscoe finished fourth in the Daytona 500, earning 33 points at the Great American Race. However, NASCAR concluded after a post-race inspection that he used a modified spoiler in time trials.
An appeals panel determined otherwise, ruling in Briscoe's favor.
"The panel believes that the elongation of some of the holes on the number 19 Cup car spoiler base is caused by the process of attaching that specific spoiler base to the rear deck and not modification of the single source part," the appeals board said, per The Athletic's Jeff Gluck.
The reversal is massive for Briscoe, who would have otherwise needed a win to make the Cup Series playoffs. He goes from 36th place with -28 points to tied for 15th with Carson Hocevar at 72 points.
"Just when I thought I got a free spot, you had to jump up and tie me in points today," Hocevar joked in response to Briscoe's post.
Briscoe suddenly has a new outlook in pursuit of his first Cup Series title. After finishing 14th at Circuit of the Americas, the 30-year-old will look to keep climbing the standings at Phoenix Raceway.
