We're just three days away from the Daytona 500 and the formal start of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series. But two drivers will have to make due with replacement crew chiefs following some NASCAR rules violations.
According to NASCAR insider Bob Pockrass, the crew chiefs for No. 34 Todd Gilliland (Chris Lawson, Front Row Motorsports) and No. 51 Cody Ware (Billy Plourde, Rick Ware Racing) have been ejected for tech violations that occurred yesterday.
Per the report, Lawson will be replaced by engineer Kevyn Rebolledo. Plourde will be replaced by Rick Ware Racing's competition director Tommy Baldwin.
"NASCAR has ejected crew chiefs for Todd Gilliland (Chris Lawson) and Cody Ware (Billy Plourde) for tech violation yesterday. Lawson replacement is engineer Kevyn Rebolledo; RWR competition director Tommy Baldwin replacing Plourde (engineer ejected Wednesday is back)," Pockrass wrote.
"NASCAR says the Gilliland and Ware crew chiefs are ejected for the entire Daytona 500 weekend for improper weight in the car," he explained in a follow-up.

NASCAR fans aren't exactly crying a river for Gilliland or Ware though. Ware has a lot of people who deeply hate him and they let it be known in the responses to Pockrass' post:
"cody was 8 tenths behind the next slowest driver in an illegal car how is that even possible," one user mocked.
"Can we eject the felon in the 51 while we’re at it," another wrote in response.
"Cody Ware so (expletive), that they gave his crew chief a weekend off to think about his life choices," wrote a third.
Gilliland and Ware have a number of things in common. Both are the sons of former NASCAR racers and both have a little over 100 races in the NASCAR Cup Series but neither has reached the checkered flag first. They have a combined 12 top 10 finishes though.
The winner of the Daytona 500 will qualify for the NASCAR Cup playoffs and win one of the most prestigious races in American motorsports. Gilliland and Ware will have to dig extra deep to find a path to victory in this one after what NASCAR just did to their teams.

Tensions boiled over between Hendrick Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott during the Iowa Corn 350. After a grueling five-race stretch with just one top-10 finish, Larson appeared to have righted the ship, scoring P4 at Dover two weeks ago and finishing runner-up to Bubba Wallace in the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis. Starting third on Sunday after a strong qualifying run, Larson wrapped up a caution-free opening stage in sixth. That’s when the 0.875-mile oval surrounded by Iowa’s cornfields turned into a minefield. On a Stage 2 restart, Elliott made heavy contact with Larson’s left-front tire while going three-wide, with Larson up high and Chase Briscoe pinned to the inside. The hit sent the No. 5 Chevrolet skating sideways, but Larson managed to control the car well and avoided disaster. Though he kept quiet initially, he radioed that the car’s handling had taken a turn for the worse. Just 20 laps later, the drama reignited. On the very next restart, the Hendrick teammates leaned on each other again, fighting for the same patch of asphalt in the middle lane. Finally, the third flashpoint came in the closing stage with 99 laps remaining. Battling Christopher Bell for sixth, the No. 20 Toyota snapped loose and clipped Larson’s left side, sending the HMS car up the track and perilously close to the wall. That was Larson’s breaking point. Over the radio, the 33-year-old unleashed his frustration: “F**k every single motherf***ing a**hole. God damn it! How much f****** room do I have to leave people? … I’ve been quiet for 45 minutes… I’ve been trying to be a good teammate, a good competitor, and it hasn’t gotten me anywhere for the last f***ing hour.” Despite surviving multiple blows, Larson limped home in 28th, a far cry from where his day began. Elliott fared better, finishing 14th, while neither could touch William Byron, who dominated to complete the rare Iowa trifecta with wins in the Truck, Xfinity, and Cup Series. Next, all three drivers will face off at Watkins Glen. But before that, it’d be interesting to know Elliott’s side of the story about what happened at Iowa between the two teammates.
The New Orleans Saints' three-way quarterback competition is narrowing before the team's first preseason contest against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Per Ross Jackson of Louisiana Sports, second-year quarterback Spencer Rattler has looked the best at training camp this summer, going 83-of-114 passing (72.8 percent) for eight touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns and four interceptions. Rattler is beating out rookie Tyler Shough. The second-round pick has completed just 62 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and three interceptions. 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener has completed 69.6 percent of his passes for five touchdowns and one Interception. Jackson believes first-year head coach Kellen Moore is priming Rattler as the favorite to start in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals. "Over the team’s 10 practices, these three young passers have seen their chance to earn the starting role to begin the season in a rotation of first-team reps," Jackson wrote. "But there are decisions the Saints have made in the process that indicate a favorite. "After looking over individual performance stats, practice rep distribution and the team’s treatment of each quarterback throughout the important and highly-productive scrimmages on camp day 10, it’s become clear that Rattler is comfortably in the lead, for now." Jackson thinks Rattler can fend off his "convincing lead" for the starting job if he plays competently against the Chargers on Sunday. Rattler feels like the safe choice for Moore over Shough and Haener, at least to start the regular season. He appeared in seven games and started in six in 2024. Rattler played inconsistently as a rookie, throwing four touchdowns to five interceptions. However, he's had time to develop. Given his numbers in training camp, Rattler appears to be the most polished quarterback before the regular season. Shough could eventually develop into the Saints' best option, but the rookie's completion percentage against friendly competition at camp is low before he even faces live action in the preseason.
The Miami Marlins achieved a franchise first on Sunday. In doing so, they carved out an interesting place in MLB history. With a 7-3 victory over the Yankees, the Marlins swept New York for the first time in a series of three or more games. In doing so, the Marlins became the only team to have a winning record, including the postseason, against the Yankees. The Yankees now have a 22-21 record against the Marlins in the regular season. However, the Marlins won the 2003 World Series against the Yankees in six games, giving the Fish a 25-24 record all-time. The Marlins' victory on Sunday meant more than a unique place in baseball history. That victory evened the Marlins' record at 55-55, the first time they have been at .500 or better since April 15 (8-8). The Marlins are 30-14 in their last 44 games, tying the 2003 championship team for the best stretch (last done from June 18-Aug. 9) in franchise history. The Marlins defied expectations at the trade deadline, holding on to pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera. Their only trade involved sending outfielder Jesus Sanchez to Houston, acquiring pitcher Ryan Gusto and a pair of prospects. Expectations were that the Marlins were simply waiting for the offseason to trade those pitchers, as there may be a larger market. Instead, the generally inexperienced Marlins roster is growing and improving by the day. They have clawed back from a 24-40 start to the season to pull themselves into the NL wild-card conversation. Although a lot would need to go right for the Marlins to reach the playoffs this season, they could be a dangerous team over the rest of the season and beyond. The Yankees found that out the hard way.
While NFL training camp season is a time to keep an eye on how some players are preparing on the field for the upcoming year, it's also a time to keep an eye on the players holding out for new contracts. One of the biggest offensive names holding out this year is Buffalo Bills running back James Cook, who recorded his second-consecutive 1,000-yard campaign in three seasons and scored 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024. While Cook is on site for Bills practice, he sat out of Sunday’s mandatory practice. When asked why, he had a very simple answer. “Oh nothing. Business,” he said. Cook, who was drafted by the Bills in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, is entering the final year of his rookie contract and looking to become one of the highest-paid RB’s in the NFL.
