Tension on Kyle Busch Radio Reveal Frustrations Building on No. 8 Team

Through the first 11 races of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, it’s been surprisingly close between the two Richard Childress Racing cars driven by Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon. Over that span, the pair have the same number of top 20s (7) while the No. 8 driver has one more top 10 (4) and the organization’s lone top five at Circuit of the Americas.

When reviewing the season, the two-time champion had a strong start with three of those top 10s coming in the first four races. In the seven races since, he’s scored one top 10, a 10th at Darlington while he’s tallied four results of 20th or worse.

Conversely, the No. 3 driver had an up-and-down start to the 2025 campaign with two of his first five races 32nd or worse. However, in the last half-dozen Cup events, Dillon has four finishes inside the top 15, including three consecutive top 10s and his best finish of the season at Texas, where he finished seventh.

Coming into Kansas, the No. 8 team had high hopes after last year’s run when the driver was leading the race late but had an unforced error, crashed and ended his day.

During Saturday’s qualifying session, the recently-turned 40-year-old appeared to have a good run going when he once again made a mistake and got into the outside wall for an extended time. Over the team radio, spotter Derek Kneeland was unable to hide his frustration.

“Let me guess — we were probably tracking in the green until that happened,” Kneeland said, referencing the car's position relative to the top car in qualifying.

"Oh, probably been about fifth, sixth,” crew chief Randall Burnett replied.

“Sorry man. We’ll get you tuned up for tomorrow,” Burnett said to Busch before shifting his focus back to Kneeland.

“Did he get the wall at all or no?” the crew chief inquired.

“Oh yeah,” the spotter responded. “ Right side's [expletive] killed. We drug it from about the end of the billboards of the Craftsman logo all the way until we were straight off of four.”

Moments later, a frustrated Busch had a simple question.

“Do we have a garage number?” he asked.

Busch qualified 35th. Dillon qualified 20th.

The RCR cars and the rest of the Cup competition will hit the track on Sunday. Coverage begins at 3 p.m. ET on FS1.
