It was yet another weekend and yet another disappointing Sunday for Tyler Reddick at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The 23XI Racing driver started the Round of 12 three points below the cutline and is now 23 points behind it after finishing the race in 21st place.
Two more races are left in the round. One will be at the Kansas Speedway and the other will go down at the Charlotte Roval. Ideally, he would consider himself to have two more shots left in the gun to make it to the Round of 8. But the road course dominance of a certain driver from New Zealand has rendered it otherwise.
Shane van Gisbergen is unbeatable at a road course, as he has proven multiple times this season. For Reddick to bank on winning at the Roval to overcome his points deficit would be a fool’s errand. This makes the upcoming race at Kansas his best chance of surviving the current scare.
Having this awareness, he noted in a recent episode of the “Door, Bumper, Clear” podcast that either he or his teammate, Bubba Wallace, will still be in a must-win situation when they leave the Sunflower State. Asked if 23XI Racing is in a must-win situation currently, he said, “I think it's very possible that leaving Kansas, one of us will be.”
“For one to have a good day and close the gap, the other can't have as good a day. I don't know. I feel like we typically perform pretty equally well, right? But man, it's a tough hole. You know, we were able to eliminate a 20-point gap pretty easily in the Round of 16. In the Round of 12, it gets harder.”
Wallace is at the bottom of the playoff table, 27 points below the cutline. So, what happens if one of them doesn't have a good enough day at Kansas and ends up facing a tough situation at the Roval? Reddick believes, "We would have to have almost a strong enough day where we were in contention to win all day long but didn't win."
A driver can’t expect to have a 50 or 60 points day at a track like the Roval unless they are a road course ace like van Gisbergen. The No. 45 Toyota Camry XSE driver would be better off banking all his hopes this weekend and seeing what comes out of it.
