Following our piece about the predicted 25 best point guards in the NBA before the season started, now it is time to re-rank the best point guards in the league just a month and a half after opening night. The 2024-25 NBA season is certainly well underway, and a clear hierarchy of elite point guards is already emerging.
Each player on this list has impressed in unique ways, showcasing their ability to dominate games, facilitate their team's offense, and deliver in clutch moments. From young stars taking the next step to established veterans maintaining their greatness, this ranking reflects the dynamic nature of the league's most demanding and entertaining position.
Statistics In 2024-25: 29.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 6.4 APG, 1.7 SPG, 1.1 BPG, 2.8 TOV, 50.5% FG, 34.3% 3-PT FG, 85.6% FT
Win-Loss Record: 14-4 (1st in Western Conference)
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has elevated himself to the pinnacle of point guard play, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the best start in the Western Conference as the first seed. His offensive prowess is undeniable, blending a silky mid-range game with the ability to finish at the rim through contact.
Shai’s improved playmaking and leadership have been instrumental in the Thunder's presence as a genuine contender, especially with Chet Holmgren currently out for a handful of weeks at least. What separates Gilgeous-Alexander is his two-way impact.
Averaging nearly two steals and over a block per game, he’s as disruptive on defense as he is efficient on offense. Shai’s ability to take over late in games has made him one of the most feared players in crunch time, and his MVP candidacy feels legitimate at this point in the season.
Statistics In 2024-25: 28.1 PPG, 7.6 RPG, 7.6 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.4 BPG, 3.3 TOV, 43.5% FG, 32.4% 3-PT FG, 78.3% FT
Win-Loss Record: 11-8
Luka Doncic remains an offensive maestro, capable of orchestrating the Dallas Mavericks' offense like a seasoned conductor. His nightly triple-double threat and unmatched ability to read defenses make him one of the most unguardable players in the league. Despite a dip in efficiency, Luka’s sheer volume of production keeps him firmly among the league’s elite.
The Mavericks' slightly above-average record is a reflection of Luka’s brilliance as well as his occasional struggles with consistency. Following last year's impressive Finals run, Doncic has the potential to propel the Mavericks into the top tier of contenders before the season's end.
Statistics In 2024-25: 31.1 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 6.9 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.2 BPG, 4.5 TOV, 43.0% FG, 35.6% 3-PT FG, 84.8% FT
Win-Loss Record: 6-12
LaMelo Ball’s scoring explosion has been one of the most surprising developments this season. Currently second in the league in points per game (behind Giannis Antetokounmpo with 32.4 PPG), he has taken on a massive offensive load for the Charlotte Hornets, showcasing incredible range and creativity. His flashy passes and ability to dictate pace make him one of the most entertaining players to watch.
However, LaMelo’s high turnover rate and the Hornets’ struggles in the win column raise questions about his overall impact. While his individual stats are stellar, his challenge will be translating those numbers into team success as the season progresses. Still, we can't deny Ball's production as a top-three point guard in the world right now.
Statistics In 2024-25: 28.0 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 5.8 APG, 1.7 SPG, 0.1 BPG, 3.6 TOV, 50.1% FG, 34.7% 3-PT FG, 80.8% FT
Win-Loss Record: 9-10
De’Aaron Fox has established himself as one of the league’s premier scorers and clutch performers. His blazing speed and improved three-point shot have made him a more versatile offensive threat, and his defensive intensity remains a hallmark of his game. Fox’s leadership has been pivotal for a Sacramento Kings team that is looking to make noise after adding DeMar DeRozan this summer.
Despite his efforts, the Kings' sub-.500 record holds him back from ranking higher. Fox has consistently delivered in big moments, but he’ll need more support from his teammates to push Sacramento back into the playoff picture. However, we do not have doubts about Fox's ability to do that and his numbers are more than impressive this season.
Statistics In 2024-25: 22.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 6.5 APG, 1.6 SPG, 0.6 BPG, 3.6 TOV, 47.5% FG, 44.4% 3-PT FG, 95.8% FT
Win-Loss Record: 12-6
Even at age 36 with a few months away until he turns 37, Stephen Curry continues to redefine the limits of greatness. While his scoring numbers are down slightly, his efficiency remains unmatched, with a blistering 44.4% from beyond the arc. Curry’s ability to draw defensive attention has been crucial in creating opportunities for his teammates on a resurgent Golden State Warriors squad.
Curry’s leadership and championship experience have kept Golden State among the West’s elite. Though not putting up the usual MVP-caliber numbers we have come to expect, his all-around contributions and impact on winning solidify his place in the top five. Of course, it also helps that the Warriors have the third seed in the West despite losing Klay Thompson this summer.
Statistics In 2024-25: 26.0 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 7.7 APG, 0.9 SPG, 0.2 BPG, 2.8 TOV, 44.1% FG, 34.8% 3-PT FG, 92.0% FT
Win-Loss Record: 9-9
Damian Lillard’s second season with the Milwaukee Bucks has not lived up to expectations in terms of team record but the player has certainly performed individually. His elite shooting, particularly from the free-throw line, and improved playmaking have made him a stabilizing force for his squad despite the difficult start to the year.
Still, the team’s middling record reflects the growing pains of integrating a superstar into a new system and a new coaching staff following last year's firing of Adrian Griffin. As chemistry builds, Lillard has the tools and leadership to propel his team into the playoff race, making his ceiling this season sky-high.
Statistics In 2024-25: 24.5 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 5.4 APG, 1.1 SPG, 0.2 BPG, 2.3 TOV, 50.9% FG, 46.6% 3-PT FG, 87.5% FT
Win-Loss Record: 11-8
Kyrie Irving has been a revelation this season, combining scoring efficiency with a career-best three-point shooting percentage (46.6%). His offensive artistry has been on full display, with dazzling drives, pull-up jumpers, and a knack for hitting big shots. Irving’s improved efficiency and lower turnover rate have made him a steady contributor to his team.
While Irving’s defensive limitations persist, his offensive contributions are undeniable. With his team hovering above .500, Kyrie has proven he can still thrive alongside other stars including Luka Doncic, reminding everyone why he remains one of the most skilled guards in the NBA.
Statistics In 2024-25: 25.6 PPG, 2.8 RPG, 7.9 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.0 BPG, 2.3 TOV, 48.9% FG, 39.6% 3-PT FG, 84.8% FT
Win-Loss Record: 10-8
Jalen Brunson’s rise to stardom continues unabated as he has become the clear leader of the New York Knicks. His efficient scoring and playmaking have kept the Knicks competitive in a crowded Eastern Conference as the fourth seed. Brunson’s ability to handle pressure and deliver clutch performances has solidified his reputation as one of the league’s most reliable point guards.
What makes Brunson’s play even more impressive is his low turnover rate despite carrying a heavy offensive load. His consistent performances suggest that the Knicks’ investment in him as their franchise centerpiece is paying dividends, and the team has major hopes for making a Finals run after adding Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges this summer.
Statistics In 2024-25: 21.8 PPG, 3.7 RPG, 12.5 APG, 1.4 SPG, 0.2 BPG, 4.6 TOV, 38.2% FG, 32.5% 3-PT FG, 90.0% FT
Win-Loss Record: 8-11
Trae Young continues to be one of the league’s premier playmakers, leading the NBA in assists with 12.5 per game. His ability to create opportunities for teammates and control the offense has been unmatched. While his shooting efficiency has been a concern, Young’s free-throw consistency and knack for drawing fouls remain strengths.
The Hawks’ struggles this season raise questions about Young’s ability to lead a winning team although it is absolutely wrong to blame the point guard. While his playmaking is elite, improving his shot selection and defensive engagement will be critical to elevating both his game and his team.
Statistics In 2024-25: 23.6 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 5.1 APG, 0.7 SPG, 0.1 BPG, 2.6 TOV, 46.6% FG, 41.4% 3-PT FG, 85.0% FT
Win-Loss Record: 8-8
Tyler Herro has transitioned seamlessly into a primary playmaking role, showcasing his ability to score and facilitate at a high level. His sharpshooting from deep and ability to create his own shot have made him a consistent offensive threat. Herro’s development as a passer has also been a bright spot, as he’s taken on more ball-handling responsibilities.
While Herro’s numbers are impressive, his defensive limitations and Miami’s .500 record keep him at the bottom of this list. Nevertheless, his performance this season suggests he has the potential to climb higher as the Miami Heat aim to improve in the standings.
