After Jayson Tatum went down with a torn Achilles during the second round of the playoffs last season, the Boston Celtics decided to make some major changes this offseason.
Boston began their offseason by trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazer for Anfernee Simons and they also dealt Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks.
These two moves allowed the Celtics to move below the second apron as they decided to cut salary.
Despite this, Boston still has Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard leading the way for them, though Tatum’s injury will be a massive blow to their title chances this season.
While the Celtics have already made multiple moves to cut salary this summer, they could elect to make more moves ahead of the trade deadline and these three players could be potential trade candidates for them.
While the Celtics acquired Simons this offseason in the trade that sent Holiday to the Trail Blazers, his fit in Boston has already been questioned before he has even suited up for them.
Because of this, the Celtics may look to move Simons at some point this season, especially if his fit in their rotation does not work for them, and there could be quite a few teams that show interest in acquiring him.
The 26-year-old guard could help the Celtics land more talent for their roster which could come up big during the 2026-27 season when Tatum is expected to be back from injury which will likely have Boston as a title threat once again.
Sam Hauser’s name has been in many trade rumors and mock trades this offseason and if Boston elects to cut more salary from their roster this season, they could look to move him.
Of course, Hauser is a great 3-point shooter as he has a career 42.0% 3-point percentage and with many teams around the NBA looking to add more outside shooting to their roster, he could end up being a key trade piece for the Celtics.
Despite this, Boston has shown little interest in moving Hauser this offseason and that could remain the case heading towards the trade deadline, though that could change if they are offered the right trade package for him.
The Celtics acquired Xavier Tillman at the trade deadline in 2023 from the Memphis Grizzlies and he played a key role for them off the bench during his first season with them.
Despite this, Tillman’s minutes were cut in half last season as he went from averaging 13.7 minutes per game during the 2023-24 season to 7.0 minutes per game last season, which caused his production to take a massive drop off as well.
The 26-year-old center also played in only 33 games last season due to injuries, which was a major factor in his cut in playing time, and if he is unable to bounce back this season, Boston may elect to move on from him despite their need of frontcourt depth.
For the Celtics, it is set to be an interesting season that could see them elect to make more changes to their roster as they try to build towards the 2026-27 season for when Tatum returns from injury.
