For the first time since 2016, the San Antonio Spurs have been scheduled to play a Christmas Day game. For the first time in franchise history, the Spurs will take on the New York Knicks on the holiday, and the NBA has made it very clear what they want to see.
In March, the last time these two teams matched up, they offered the game of the year. Jalen Brunson scored a career-high 61 points, but Wembanyama's 40 points and 20 rebounds were enough for the Spurs to topple the Knicks in overtime.
As the clock hit zero, Wembanyama threw the game ball into the stands. The Knicks--and Brunson--wanted the ball to commemorate Brunson's game, but the winner usually gets to choose what happens, and Wembanyama made a fan's night.
As the Knicks look for revenge and the Spurs look to climb up the standings, we have three bold predictions before tipoff.
Prediction 1: Brunson Takes 30 Shots
In the loss to the Spurs, Brunson scored 61 points on a career-high 47 shots. This season, the Knicks have improved their offense with Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, so Brunson won't be expected to dominate on the scoring front.
Still, if Brunson is petty and holds a grudge, he will look to match his production on Christmas. It's unlikely he gets close to 50 shots, but his season-high so far this year is 24 field goals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. It should go without saying that he passes that mark.
Prediction 2: Wembanyama Drops a Triple-Double
Much like Brunson, Wembanyama is entering the game with a chip on his shoulder. The NBA fined him $25,000 for throwing the ball into the stands, but one can very easily argue that it was his ball to do what he pleased with. After all, his team won and he dominated.
Most players record a triple-double in only one way: points, assists, and rebounds. Wembanyama uniquely throws blocks into the mix. It's possible he records a quadruple-double at some point in his career, but we wanted to be realistic with our predictions.
So far, he has three triple-doubles in his career. In two of them, he recorded 10 or more assists, and against the Toronto Raptors last season, he got ten blocks to go with 27 points and 14 rebounds, and he added two steals and five dimes.
We aren't sure if he'll get more blocks or assists, but either way, expect a big game.
Prediction 3: The Spurs Win
The name of our site is "Inside the Spurs." Of course, we have a favorite team. At the time of writing, FanDuel has the Spurs as nine-point underdogs.
San Antonio is currently in the Play-In picture while the Knicks are the third-best team in the Eastern Conference, behind only Cleveland and the Boston Celtics. On top of that, the Spurs will be the road team, which always comes with a disadvantage.
However, the Spurs are 3-0 in games where Wembanyama records a triple-double and Brunson is only 5-4 in games where he takes 30 shots, so we like our odds.
