3 San Antonio Spurs' Offseason Targets Who Could Fix Next Season

Despite a largely disappointing season, the San Antonio Spurs have undoubtedly improved massively this year. With both Victor Wembanyama and Gregg Popovich sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Spurs have overcome those distractions and subsequent concerns and have already won more games than they did in last season's entirety.

However, the Spurs will likely miss the postseason and Play-In Tournament this year and will need to improve massively this offseason before making a playoff push next season.

Having Victor Wembanyama in his third season should help massively, but there are three major moves the Spurs could make to improve over the summer, adding to their core of De'Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, and Wemby.

1. Naz Reid, free agent (player option)

Next season, Naz Reid has a $15 million player option. After the Minnesota Timberwolves traded away Karl-Anthony Towns, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year has stepped up into a bigger role and has certainly risen to the occasion.

Averaging 14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and a block while shooting 48.2 percent from the floor and 40.4 percent from 3-point range, he is one of the best floor-spacing bigs in the NBA and a solid defender, and he is certainly worth more than his $15 million option.

There is thought that he could test free agency, although the Wolves will definitely offer him more money should he opt-out. However, between the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Indiana Pacers, and possibly even the Brooklyn Nets, he will have plenty of suitors.

The Spurs, behind Wembanyama, don't really have a proven backup center. Reid's perimeter play would allow him to share the court with Wembanyama in a hyper-mobile lineup, and he could give the second unit a much-needed boost down low.

The Spurs would have to overpay to add him, although it would certainly be worth it.

2. Malcolm Brogdon, free agent

Veteran Malcolm Brogdon is on the last year of his contract, and the former Sixth Man of the Year will have suitors lined out the door looking to sign him.

He spent the last two seasons playing for the woeful Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards and will almost certainly want to get back to playing winning basketball. Plenty of free agents and draft prospects have made it clear that they want to play alongside Wembanyama, and Brogdon could be no exception.

Averaging 12.7 points and 4.1 assists in Washington this season, Brogdon is in the midst of the worst 3-point shooting season of his career. In San Antonio, he likely wouldn't crack the starting lineup, but he would get plenty of minutes with the first unit, despite coming off the bench.

A guard rotation of Brogdon, Fox, Vassell, and Castle would give the Spurs a decent amount of depth, shooting, and defense, and the Spurs could mix-and-match Brogdon, Fox, and Castle, all of whom can play as primary initiators.

3. Kevin Durant, trade acquisition

This summer, Kevin Durant will be the hottest name to keep an eye out for. The Phoenix Suns, much like the Spurs, are expected to miss any form of postseason this year, but unlike San Antonio, the Suns entered the year with sky-high expectations.

The Durant, Bradley Beal, and Devin Booker trio has simply not worked out. Unless the Suns decide to trade Booker, moving on from Durant is the only option they have if they want to re-tool their roster, and the Spurs can offer more draft capital than any other interested team.

It's worth noting that Durant has only one more full season left on his contract, but the Silver and Black, with a big three of Wembanyama, Durant, and Fox would likely be preseason title favorites.

To add Durant's $54.7 million salary, the Spurs would have to make some tough choices, dealing away Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, and possibly Devin Vassell. However, adding one of the best scorers of all-time, even one as seemingly disgruntled as Durant, would make the Spurs a truly deadly team.

To keep KD, a known diva, in check, the Spurs would have to rely on Gregg Popovich returning to the sidelines or at least playing a massive role in the front office. Durant has soured relationships with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets, and now the Suns, so having a firm hand would be a necessity to get the most out of him, but his talent has long been undeniable.
