Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers have completed a remarkable comeback from a 3–1 deficit against the No. 2-seeded Boston Celtics to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals. They will now face Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks in the next round.
The 76ers were without Embiid for the first three games, and his return in Game 4 did little to prevent them from falling into a 3–1 hole. However, with their season on the line, Embiid and company forced a Game 7 at TD Garden before securing a 109–100 win on Saturday.
The 2023 MVP led the way with 34 points and 12 rebounds, while Tyrese Maxey added 30 points and 11 rebounds. Rookie V. J. Edgecombe contributed 23 points as Philadelphia advanced to set up a second-round series against the Knicks.
The No. 2-seeded Knicks will have home-court advantage in the series, which begins Monday at Madison Square Garden. Below is the complete schedule for the 76ers-Knicks Eastern Conference semifinal series:
The Knicks finished the regular season with a 53–29 record and defeated the Atlanta Hawks in six games in the first round. They enter this series relatively well-rested, having last played on Thursday.
New York will rely heavily on Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, with the latter’s matchup against Embiid drawing significant attention. The two big men have had a rivalry dating back to 2019, and this will mark their first playoff meeting.
The Knicks and 76ers split their four regular-season matchups this year. While New York enters as the favorite, Embiid and Philadelphia have shown they are dangerous when in rhythm and cannot be overlooked.
