The Buss siblings’ infighting has reached the point that commissioner Adam Silver may have to do something about it.
There is an expectation that Silver will intervene and try to smooth over the issues among the Buss family relating to the sale of the Los Angeles Lakers, according to Tom Friend of Sports Business Journal. Silver is known to be close with Jeanie Buss, who is fighting her siblings’ efforts to sell their share of the Lakers to incoming owners Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner.
This demonstrates just how rough things have gotten among the Buss siblings, who are very much at each other’s throats over the future of the Lakers. Five of the six have adamantly said they intend to sell no matter what Jeanie says, while Jeanie is determined to prevent that.
Silver’s options are limited, and the five siblings in favor of selling probably won’t eagerly listen to what he has to say if he is perceived to be on Jeanie’s side. However, beyond simply turning into a PR issue, the situation is threatening to foul up the $12.5 billion sale of one of the league’s most iconic franchises.
For now, the incoming owners appear determined to make the drama go away as cleanly as possible. That is likely Silver’s goal as well.
