Adam Silver Offers Insight Into LeBron James’ Plans for Next Season

LeBron James, now 41, is leading a short-handed Los Angeles Lakers team into the 2026 NBA Playoffs following a 53–29 regular season that earned them the 4th seed in the Western Conference.

With superstars Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves both sidelined by late-season injuries, the burden falls heavily on the NBA's all-time scoring leader to carry the Purple and Gold through a first-round series against the Houston Rockets.

James was limited to only 60 games this regular season. So he fell short of the NBA's 65-game threshold for postseason honors like All-NBA or All-Defensive teams. The sciatica and foot issues that cost James the first 14 games of the season lingered throughout the year, contributing to his reduced game total.

He is entering the playoffs in a contract year, and there is retirement talk everywhere. According to The Athletic, he hasn't made up his mind yet. He could retire, stay with the Lakers, or even finish his career elsewhere.

Despite all the uncertainty, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver offered the most direct read yet on what James plans to do.

Appearing on WFAN, he said, “I mean, he’s not just a 41-year-old player in the league with the most points ever in so many different categories, but he’s still playing at an incredibly high level. It’s not like he’s just sort of out there.”

He also told host Craig Carton that he has not spoken with James since the regular season ended, but added, “I have every indication that he plans to keep playing next season."

The Lakers' 15-2 run in March proved that James, Doncic, and Reaves work well together as a trio. This success reportedly convinced James that the Lakers' core is capable of championship contention, increasing the likelihood of him re-signing this summer.

General Manager Rob Pelinka has publicly stated that the organization would "love for LeBron's story to be that he retired a Laker." He emphasized a commitment to respecting James' own timetable while providing him with a competitive roster.

These are the most solid confirmations we’ve seen from outside LeBron’s inner circle. While the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers are interested, the luxury tax penalties can restrict them from adding James to their roster.

For now, though, James' immediate focus is on the court. The Los Angeles Lakers are set to host the Houston Rockets for Game 1 of the Western Conference First Round, with tip-off scheduled for Saturday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
