Al Horford has spent a bit of time watching Jonathan Kuminga in training and hasn’t taken long to be impressed by what he’s seen from the young forward.
Now that a tense summer is in the past, Kuminga is fully focused on making an impact with the Golden State Warriors next season.
Kuminga re-signed with the team last week on a $48.5 million deal, finally bringing an end to what had been a drawn-out contract situation.
Kuminga and Steve Kerr still have work to do on their relationship, but the forward seems determined to prove himself and earn regular minutes this season.
Al Horford recently met with reporters and shared his first thoughts on playing alongside Jonathan Kuminga. The veteran was quick to praise the youngster’s skillset.
Horford said he’s excited about what they can do together, noting how Kuminga’s ability to attack the rim could open up more space for both of them.
“JK with his athleticism and the way that he moves and how much pressure he generates on the rim, it’s going to be great. I feel like, with me and him out there, I feel like I’ll be able to give him some space,” Horford told reporters.
“He probably won’t always have a guy, an extra defender there, and if he does, then I’m going to be open. And either I’m going to shoot or we’re going to get a really good shot.”
At this point, neither Kuminga nor Horford are expected to be in the starting lineup. Steve Kerr seems to prefer a rotation that doesn’t include either of them right now.
Even so, both players still have the potential to play important roles off the bench. That’s especially true for Kuminga, who isn’t likely to move ahead of Jimmy Butler or Draymond Green in the starting five.
Kuminga brings athleticism and energy, which could give a boost to the second unit. If he settles into that role and makes an impact, there’s even a chance he could be considered for Sixth Man of the Year honours down the line.

For now, his focus will be on making good use of whatever minutes come his way. If he performs well enough early on, there might be opportunities for a bigger role later in the season.
