The Cleveland Cavaliers are not interested in trading for Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant, a league source told Sam Amico of Hoops Wire.
The Suns are going to trade Durant this offseason, but the Cavaliers “are a definite no on Durant,” the source told Amico.
Cleveland had the best record in the East this year. After sweeping the Miami Heat in the first round of the playoffs, it appeared the Cavaliers would compete for the championship for the first time in the second post-LeBron James era.
However, the Indiana Pacers beat the Cavaliers in the conference semifinals in five games, with Cleveland losing all three home games.
Donovan Mitchell arrived in Cleveland in 2022 via the blockbuster trade with the Utah Jazz. While Mitchell has put up stellar numbers for the Cavaliers, the team has yet to advance past the conference semifinals with the shooting guard leading the way.
Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman isn’t going to trade Mitchell or Evan Mobley this offseason. There have been rumors that Darius Garland and/or Jarrett Allen could be moved, although a Garland trade seems unlikely after the guard had surgery on his left big toe.
According to Joe Vardon of The Athletic, Garland could miss the Cavaliers’ first 10 games of next season.
Durant is one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, so it’s going to take a lot to get him, even though the future Hall of Famer turns 37 in September.
KD averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists for the Suns this season while shooting 52.7% from the field, 43.0% from beyond the arc and 83.9% from the free-throw line. He would have made one of the three All-NBA teams had he met the minimum games played mark.
According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Suns are talking to the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Heat and New York Knicks about a Durant trade.
A league source told Hoops Wire that Durant prefers the Suns trade him to the Spurs so he can play with All-Stars Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox.
