D'Angelo Russell has had a difficult 2023-24 season with the Los Angeles Lakers, and the 27-year-old took to X on Tuesday night to share a cryptic message.
"Fake progressive and woke. I started saying less."
For those unaware, this is actually a lyric from Lil Yachty and J. Cole's song, The Secret Recipe. As to what message Russell is trying to convey with it, it's beyond me. This is about as cryptic as things can get.
Russell had declined to speak to reporters after a couple of games earlier this month but has fulfilled his media duties in recent games. He also speaks at length on The Backyard Podcast, which he started last month, so I'm not entirely sure what he means by this post. Maybe there is no meaning at all and he just randomly posted a lyric, only he knows.
D'Angelo Russell Isn't Paying Much Attention To Trade Rumors
The Lakers have had a disappointing start to the 2023-24 season and currently sport a 20-21 record. There has been a lot of talk about the team needing to make some moves and Russell has found himself at the center of it. His name is the one that has come up frequently, but Russell brushed off the Lakers trade rumors.
“No, I mean, it is what it is,” Russell said. “Since I’ve been in the league, I’ve kind of been dealing with that to where I know I can’t control it. I know those things happen, no matter how well you play, how professional you act, how many shots you make or miss, this is gonna happen regardless. So I don’t really go about my days worrying about that, to be honest.”
Russell has averaged 15.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game this season for L.A. He had a good start to the campaign but then struggled a bit and found himself out of the starting lineup.
Russell admitted he was not happy about being benched by head coach Darvin Ham, but it wasn't something that lasted for too long. Ham reinserted him into the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Utah Jazz and Russell responded by having his best outing of the season, finishing with 39 points, 3 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, and 2 blocks.
Ham now plans to stick with the same starting lineup for the foreseeable future, so Russell will have a chance to show he is someone worth keeping for the Lakers.
D'Angelo Russell Addressed The Lakers' Struggles
There has been plenty of analysis done on just why the Lakers have struggled so much this season. There were high expectations of them coming into the season, and L.A. has pretty much fallen flat on its face. Russell explained that the Lakers' struggles were down to there being too many holes in their system.
“I think it’s just a lot of holes in our system right now,” Russell said, via The Athletic. “You use the regular season to figure those things out, the ups and downs, the digression, the setbacks, all these things. Injuries just keep playing a part in our success.”
Russell also stated they are still trying to figure things out. They have tried different lineups and groups, but no combination has worked all that well. He insisted there was no panic behind the scenes and remains confident that they can turn things around.

Browns make curious decision with rookie QB Shedeur Sanders
The Cleveland Browns are giving Shedeur Sanders special treatment in training camp, but it's not the type of favoritism the fifth-round pick would necessarily want. Per Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN, Sanders is the only Browns quarterback who has not been taking reps with the first-team offense during OTAs or the first two practices of training camp. Former Pittsburgh Steelers first-round pick Kenny Pickett, veteran Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel have all split reps with the first team. Despite being asked to throw passes to members of the equipment staff amid a shortage of professional pass-catchers for a four-quarterback roster, Sanders said he's thankful for the opportunity to show the Browns coaching staff his talents. "I feel like that it's not in my control, so I'm not going to think about that or even have that in my thought process of why it is," Sanders said to a question as to why he's not getting first-team reps. "There's a lot of people who want to have the opportunity to be at this level, and I'm here and I'm thankful to have the opportunity. So, whenever that is, that is." Sanders, 23, believes that he can contribute more to the Browns than what the coaching staff is asking of him. "It doesn't make me feel down or left out because I know who I am as a person," Sanders said. "I know who I am as an individual and I know what I could bring to this team. So, I can never feel less than any circumstance." The Browns selected Sanders with the No. 144 pick in April's draft. As a player whom many draft analysts thought was a first-round talent, Cleveland took what could be the steal of the draft in the fifth round. It's curious why the Browns aren't giving Sanders a shot with the first team early in training camp before the quarterback race becomes more serious. Cleveland should see what Sanders has to offer this summer. Flacco, 40, isn't a long-term solution at the position. Pickett failed in Pittsburgh. The Browns need to gauge what rookies Gabriel and Sanders can do with the first team. Having Sanders throw balls to the equipment staff is a waste of everyone's time. But then again, Cleveland has wasted plenty of quarterbacks.
Rangers Sign Former Stanley Cup Champion to Tryout Agreement
The New York Rangers are adding to their forward depth ahead of their upcoming training camp. The Rangers are entering a new chapter of their organization under new head coach Mike Sullivan. After missing the postseason last year, the organization is trying to rebound and respond accordingly in 2025 and 2026. Former Stanley Cup champion forward Conor Sheary is the latest player to join the new-look Rangers. The veteran forward agreed to a professional tryout agreement (PTO) with the club and will look to earn an NHL deal with his performance in training camp and the preseason. Sheary is a veteran of 593 NHL games. Originally an undrafted free agent, he signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins after completing his collegiate career. Following a year with the Penguins' AHL affiliate, he forced his way onto the NHL squad after posting 36 points in his first 30 games of the 2015-2016 season at the AHL level. His debut NHL season went better than ever expected, and he was a key part of the Penguins' lineup that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Sheary's coach at the time, both at the AHL and NHL levels, was Mike Sullivan. Now, he'll get the chance to reunite with the coach under whom he won two championships. In addition to playing for the Penguins, Sheary has played for three other NHL franchises. The Pens dealt him to the Buffalo Sabres before the 2018-2019 campaign, but he would return to Pittsburgh the following season at the trade deadline. After his second stint with the Penguins, he joined the Washington Capitals. He played three seasons in Washington, D.C. before landing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he spent the past two years. Over his 593 career games, he's compiled 124 goals and 143 assists for 267 points. His best NHL season came during the 2016-2017 campaign, his second in the league. He scored 23 goals and added 30 assists for 53 points in 61 regular-season games.
Chicago Sky Announce Angel Reese Update for Indiana Fever Game
Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese missed Thursday night's game against the Seattle Storm due to a back injury. It was the second blowout loss in as many games for the Sky, who now sit at 7-17 on the WNBA season, five losses back of a postseason spot. The injury to Reese is a concerning development for a Sky team with little to no margin for error right now. An All-Star for the second straight season, Reese has averaged 13.8 points and 12.5 rebounds in 22 games for Chicago in 2025. As they eye a date with the Indiana Fever on Sunday, the Sky have announced an official Reese update. Seen going through individual drills on Saturday, Reese was on the court seemingly testing out her back ahead of Sunday's afternoon affair in Chicago. Following her morning work, Reese was officially listed as questionable on the injury report. Reese is joined on the injury report by several of her teammates, including rookie guard Hailey Van Lith who was a surprise addition with an ankle injury. As it pertains to Reese, this update should not come as much of a surprise. While she was eventually ruled out against Seattle, she did start the day questionable, which is the same approach Chicago is taking on its latest injury report. That said, Reese not being ruled out a day in advance is good news. It indicates she has a chance to play, which also suggests the injury is not too serious — aligning with comments made by head coach Tyler Marsh who has been reiterating Reese is day-to-day with this back injury. With Caitlin Clark expected to miss this game with a groin injury, the contest could be without both she and Reese.
