Derrick Rose may not be the same player that he once was, but his contract with Adidas is certainly full of superstar perks.

Derrick Rose turned 34 years old yesterday, and he was showered with a lot of praise of NBA fans all around the globe. After struggling for a few years in the league, Rose recently signed a 3-year $43 million contract with the New York Knicks. It seems like Rose will play for the Knicks for the rest of his career.

Anyway, as of now, Rose is no more than a veteran role player for the Knicks. It may be shocking since Rose was one of the biggest superstars in the league during his early years in the league.

He was drafted by the Chicago Bulls using the number one overall pick in the 2008 NBA Draft. Soon Rose blossomed into a great player and gave Bulls fans hopes of winning the NBA title.

D-Rose was so talented during his short prime that he won the 2010-11 NBA MVP award. Since Rose was just 22 years old at the time, he became the youngest player in the history of the league to win the honor.

Derrick Rose's Mega Contract With Adidas

Considering at the time, Kobe Bryant was entering the last stage of his NBA career and LeBron James was viewed as a villain by fans, Rose's popularity increased immensely. Adidas was aware of it and wanted the youngest MVP in league's history onboard. So the company gave D-Rose one of the most complicated yet best offers.

Via Sports Illustrated:

Rose’s agents were aggressively renegotiating his deal with Adidas, and during All-Star weekend Rose re-signed, consecrating one of the most lucrative endorsement contracts (reported to be worth $185 million over 14 years) in the history of sports.

Recently SI obtained his 40-page contract with Adidas, and the document shows just how far shoe companies are willing to go to accommodate an athlete. The deal called for annual retainers of $12 million per season from 2012–13 until ’16–17. (This season, he is entitled to $11 million.) It also included annual royalties of up to $6.25 million per year, as much as $4.8 million in annual appearance fees and use of a private plane. (For comparison, SI has learned that John Wall's new Adidas deal calls for him to be a paid a base salary of $4 million). Reggie Rose, Derrick’s older brother, is paid between $250,000 and $300,000 annually as a consultant. Randall Hampton, Rose’s best friend since sixth grade and his assistant, is paid between $50,000 and $75,000 annually for “consulting” services. Adidas also pledged to contribute $150,000 annually to the AAU team of Rose’s choice.

Adidas took a huge bet on Rose's career. They expected him to become the next face of the league, which is the reason why Rose was getting superstar money.

Unfortunately, due to several injuries, Rose's career derailed. So much so that Rose's close friend and former teammate Joakim Noah compared it to 9/11. Regardless, Rose has now found a way to become an amazing asset to the New York Knicks.
