Jayson Tatum will not be available when the Boston Celtics start their 2025-26 NBA campaign.
With Tatum sidelined by a torn Achilles, the Celtics will turn to Jaylen Brown to take charge of the team.
Following the departures of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, there is really no one else on the roster who can step into that role besides Brown.
Despite being named Finals MVP during Boston’s title run in 2024, there are still plenty who see Brown as a step below Tatum.
During a recent appearance on CLNS Media Boston Sports Network, longtime Celtics analyst Bob Ryan expressed a similar opinion.
“I like him, he’s fine. He’s a wonderful player. There’s a level of hierarchy in all sports. He’s at the next level, the very good level.
“But he’s not at that level, I don’t think. Just a chance to prove everybody wrong.”
Brown put up 22.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game last season while serving as the second option for the Celtics.
With Tatum off the court, those numbers are expected to grow, as this would be a good way for the small forward to answer his critics.
The Celtics finished last season with a 61-21 record, good for the second seed in the Eastern Conference. But with major changes to their line-up and Tatum sidelined, there are plenty of reasons to expect a different outcome this year.
So where should fans expect Boston to land in the standings? Ryan sees them fighting for one of the lower playoff spots.
“Naturally, there’s some blowback from young ins. ‘Who’s the old guy? What’s he talking about?’ He’s on record now, and I agree with him. I think they’re going to be lucky to be in that seven/eight mix,” he stated.
Their chances were viewed with even less optimism by Ryan’s co-host, Jeff Goodman.
“I think they’re going to be fortunate to avoid the Play-In. I really do,” Goodman boldly stated.
