Anthony Edwards stole the show as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Portland Trail Blazers 118-114 on Wednesday night.

The Timberwolves are one of the top contenders to reach the NBA Finals this season after making the Conference Finals last year.

Edwards has a strong supporting cast , including Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert, but he is the team’s driving force.

The 24-year-old certainly lived up to expectations on the opening night as he broke a Timberwolves record.

Anthony Edwards breaks Minnesota Timberwolves record

Edwards put up 41 points, seven rebounds, and one assist in the Timberwolves’ win against the Trail Blazers.

He made 14 of his 28 shots from the field (50%), and most impressively, five of his 10 three-point attempts (50%).

Edwards having only one assist shows that he was in all-out-attack mode from the first whistle, making a statement of intent.

His 41-point performance broke Karl-Anthony Towns’ record (36 pts) for the most points in a season opener in Timberwolves history.

This might not be the only history Edwards makes in the 2025-26 season. He will want to achieve something Kevin Garnett did over 20 years ago.

Anthony Edwards should be in the Most Valuable Player race

Anthony Edwards has an outside chance of winning the NBA Most Valuable Player award this season.

The top four contenders are Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, and reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Edwards might be the next most likely, as he will put up impressive statistics, and the Timberwolves could be a top four seed.

The 24-year-old has already established himself as a superstar, but he will want to add some silverware to his resume.

Edwards would become the second Timberwolves player ever to win the MVP award after Kevin Garnett in 2004.
