Auburn Tigers sensation Tahaad Pettiford sent waves of excitement through Neville Arena as he addressed fans with a heartfelt promise regarding his basketball future.
Standing at a podium in his Auburn jacket, the McDonald’s All-American guard declared, “I hope to come back next year and run it back again,” igniting cheers from the crowd and signaling his intent to continue his journey with the Tigers.
Pettiford, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound standout, has already made a significant impact in his debut season. The Jersey City native burst onto the college basketball scene, scoring 23 points in just his second NCAA Tournament game, helping the Tigers secure a victory in the Round of 32.
His scoring prowess continued with 20 points against the Michigan Wolverines in the Sweet 16, and he consistently reached double figures throughout the year in SEC play.
The announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Auburn basketball, as fans and boosters rally to ensure Pettiford’s return amidst the complexities of both the transfer portal and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals.
Coming off a devastating loss to the Florida Gators in the Final Four, Pettiford undoubtedly has a chip on his shoulder going into next season, feeling as if he has unfinished business with the University of Auburn.
Look for Pettiford to come out with a vengeance if he returns to the school for another year. As somebody who has flashed world-class potential, Pettiford can benefit from developing for at least another year before transitioning to the NBA.
