According to Daniel Blake of the Jamaica Observer, Ausar and Amen Thompson are reportedly open to playing for Jamaica at future FIBA and Olympic competitions. Both brothers were drafted in 2023, with Ausar being drafted by the Detroit Pistons and Amen by the Houston Rockets. Both brothers have had solid starts to their NBA careers, with Amen considered a premier defender in the league.
The Thompson brothers confirmed they would love to play for Jamaica in their international future. “Growing up, Jamaica has always represented gold medals. It was always a dream of mine to see a Basketball team, I always wanted to see a Basketball player with the Jamaican jersey on.” said one Thompson brother.
The brothers mentioned Olympic legend Usain Bolt when talking about athletes they grew up watching. One thing that both of the brothers brought up in their comments was the culture of Jamaica. Their home country and the chance to be able to represent Jamaica means a great deal to both of them.
Who could join the Thompson brothers on a potential Jamaican Basketball team? It’s an interesting question to take a look at. Phoenix Suns Center Nick Richards is the only player currently in the NBA born in Jamaica, but there are several players like Ausar and Amen Thompson who have Jamaican Heritage. Some notable players with Jamaican heritage are Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, Scottie Barnes, Isaiah Stewart, Andre Drummond, and many more.
There are some good players on that list, some that could complement the Thompson brother’s style. Jamal Murray would probably be the point guard, Amen Thompson could play small forward or power forward, and then Team Jamaica could probably start Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett.
There are a lot of solid players on the list, but Murray, Barrett, Barnes, Amen Thompson, and Drummond seem most likely to start. Familiarity could be a strength, as Ausar and Amen Thompson could have teammates playing with them as Isaiah is a teammate of Ausar’s.
The idea of representing your country is cool enough, but being able to do it with your brother would be a once-in-a-lifetime type of opportunity. We’ll see if the brothers officially announce it, but it sounds like they want to do it. They could complement a potential team in Jamaica well.
